Luthando Vukuza makes the first defence of his South African featherweight title against Sabelo Jubatha at the Orient Theatre in East London on Friday night. The tournament is promoted by Koko Godlo’s KK Productions in conjunction with Siphatho Handi’s Mamali Boxing Promotions.
The southpaw Vukuza (8-4-1; 0) won the title on July 24 this year in a rematch with Manelisi Mbilase after Manelisi won the vacant title in October 2008 in one of the poorest ever decisions rendered in a SA title fight.
The title became vacant when Ludumo Galada won the vacant World Boxing Foundation featherweight title in August 2008.
The 27-year-old Galada was tragically killed in a motor accident in January this year.
In July 2007 Vukuza was knocked out in the eighth round by Galada when challenging for the SA featherweight title in Mdantsane.
Jubatha who is ranked at number five in the December Boxing SA rankings comes into the contest as the underdog but has a punchers chance against the light punching Vukuza who has never won a fight inside the distance since making his pro debut in June 2005.
In 2008 Jubatha scored first round knockout wins over Ali Tinise and Siyanda Jolibokwe and in June this year he won a six round points decision over Wonga Ntoyakhe, and in his most recent contest in September he stopped the experienced Thembe Tshicila in the first round.
