In an interesting night of boxing Monday night at the Casa de los Clubes in Santo Domingo, Dominican, WBA #8 lightweight Argenis Lopez (19-0, 7 KOs) displayed some power his fans are not accustomed to see in a two round blow-out of countryman Ricardo Veras (17-6, 14 KOs). Lopez scored a knockdown in the first round with a well-timed uppercut but Veras was able to beat the count. In the second round, Argenis ended the fight with a short right cross that sent his opponent to the canvas for the full count. With this victory, Lopez retains his WBA Fedelatin title.
On the undercard, in the junior middleweight class, unbeaten Kazakhstan Olympian Kanat Islam (16-0, 14 KOs) had his hands full with game local fighter Baslio Silva (17-12, 15 KOs). Silva showed no respect for the favored visitor and the fight turned into a give-and-take battle royale that had the fans on their feet. Islam was cut over the right eye in the fourth round and had to dig deep to finally get the better of Silva, forcing the referee to stop the fight in the seventh round as the exhausted Dominican was no longer able to protect himself against the Kazakh boxer’s powerful punches.
There were 10 other interesting bouts on the card featuring young boxers versus veterans. Promoters were Manguita Promotions and Shuan Boxing.
