Unbeaten WBA featherweight champion Nicholas” The Axeman” Walters is flying to Corpus Christi, Texas, Sunday from Panama where he will participate in the Top Rank Boxing / HBO televised mega-card this coming Saturday. The card will feature three world championship bouts plus the much anticipated rematch between Nonito Donaire and Vic Darchinyan.
The Jamaican-born Walters (22-0, 18 KOs), recently signed up by Top Rank, will be making his first title defense and first appearance in a US ring against tough Mexican challenger Alberto “Kirchis” Garza (25-5-1, 20 KOs). Walters is accompanied by veteran trainer Celso Chavez, father Job Walters and Patrick Buteau of Premium Boxing Promotion (of Panama). Manager Jacques Deschamps will be joining the group on Tuesday. Before leaving for Texas, Walters commented, “I am fired up at the prospect of being given the opportunity to show the US boxing fans who is Nicholas Walters. I not only want to win, I want to make a statement. ‘This is the Axeman, he’s for real and he is a major player in the featherweight division.’”
