Unbeaten Cuban WBA interim lightweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa (23-0, 16 KOs) visited WBC President Jose Sulaiman on Tuesday in Mexico City. Gamboa, who last defended his WBA interim belt against Darley Perez in June and has no upcoming bouts scheduled, stated “I would like to be known like “Sugar” Ramos and “Mantequilla” Napoles, who 50 years ago came [from Cuba] to Mexico to make history in professional boxing. I would like to fight in Mexico and fight for a WBC title!”
Accompanying Gamboa was flamboyant Cancun-based promoter Pepe Gomez. Gamboa will apparently be joining Gomez’ stable of fighters and Pepe plans to promote a fight in Cancun between Gamboa and WBC super featherweight champion Takashi Miura.
