After achieving his fifth successful defense on December 4th against Frederic Patrac in France, WBA bantamweight champion Anselmo ‘Chemito’ Moreno (28-1-1, 10 KOs) was honored in a ceremony today by WBA executives. WBA interim bantamweight champion Antonio Cermeño (19-0, 11 KOs) , who himself s defended his title successfully last Saturday with a dramatic 11th round TKO over challenger Alejandro Valdez in Mexico was also in attendance. Gilberto Jesus Mendoza, Executive Vice President of the World Boxing Association, stated it was only the second time the WBA gave the honor of bantamweight super champion, which is given to a champion who makes five successful defenses. Former WBA bantamweight champion Wladimir Sidorenko , whom Moreno took the title from was the other.
Mr. Mendoza gave both, Moreno and Cermeño, an official document in which the WBA gives both of their promoters the opportunity to negotiate until January 30th 2010. If they don´t reach an agreement by then the WBA will order a purse bid.
Moreno is represented by Premium Boxing Promotions and Cermeño by Promociones y Eventos del Istmo, both Panamanian Companies.
In this ceremony, held at the Granada Hotel in Panama City, WBA executives also handed a very important donation to ANCEC, the main Panamanian Association to fight against cancer. Dr. Juan Monterrey, president of ANCEC, received a $25,000 USD donation as a result of the exhibition fight between Mr. Mendoza and Oscar De La Hoya on September 5th 2009 during the KO Drugs Charity Boxing Festival.
