WBA orders Malignaggi-Chavez mandatory fight

By Gabriel F. Cordero

The World Boxing Association has ordered negotiations for the mandatory fight in the welterweight division between world champion Paul Malignaggi and interim world champion Diego Chaves. As detailed in WBA Rule C.11, the champion must defend his title against mandatory challenger, in the period of nine months following the date he wins the title. Malignaggi claimed the belt on April 28, 2012, when he dethroned Vyacheslav Senchenko in the Ukraine. The negotiation period will be 30 days beginning today. If no agreement is reached a purse bid will be called.

Malignaggi has plans to return on April 27 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. So far, Shane Mosley, Marcos Maidana and Andre Berto had been mentioned as possible opponents. Looks like Chaves has been moved to the top of the list.
