Turns out that Juan Manuel Marquez and Juan Diaz will fight for the vacant WBA “super” lightweight championship as well as the vacant WBO lightweight belt in their highly anticipated showdown on February 28th at TOYOTA Center in Houston, Texas. “The more championship belts for me, the better,” said Marquez. “I want to unify the lightweight division and I’m excited to have the opportunity to add two more titles to my collection on February 28th.” The WBA and WBO titles were rendered vacant when Nate Campbell failed to make weight for his February 14th title defense against Ali Funeka. The camp of WBA regular champion Paulus Moses unsuccessfully claimed they should be the sole WBA lightweight champion, arguing “There is no possibility to promote a WBA world title where Paulus Moses would not been involved.” Marquez-Diaz is believed to be the first-ever fight for a “vacant” WBA super title.
