WBA Super Welterweight Update

By Gabriel F. Cordero

A source has informed Fightnews.com on the current situation in the WBA super welterweight division, where the current “super” world champion is Floyd Mayweather Jr. On April 20, “regular” WBA world champion Austin Trout will face WBC super welterweight king Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, should Trout win, he would also become a WBA “super” champion by virtue of unifying titles. This would create two “super” champions in the same division, but the source indicates that if the dual super champion scenario unfolds the WBA World Championships Committee would evaluate the situation, taking into consideration the rules.

The same source revealed that Mayweather has been given special WBA permission to fight on May 4 against Robert Guerrero for the WBC welterweight championship.
