Unbeaten WBC bantamweight champ Shinsuke Yamanaka (19-0-2, 14 KOs), a Japanese southpaw, will put his belt on the line against Mexican Alberto Guevara (18-1-1, 6 KOs) in Tokyo, Japan, on this coming Sunday. Today’s press conference and yesterday’s medical examination as well show they will be in such a good shape that we may expect a competitive contest.
The WBC officials were announced as follows: referee Hector Afu (Panama); judges Burt Clements, David Sutherland, Dave Moretti (all US); supervisor Frank Quill (Australia); special MC Jimmy Lennon Jr.
Asked about a nomination of WBC’s Fighter of the Year along with Mayweather, Garcia and “Superman” Stevenson, Yamanaka replied, “It’s a great honor even to be nominated therein with such internationally well-known boxers. I’ve so greatly motivated to show a good performance with the nomination.”
WBA super champ in the light-fly category Roman Gonzalez (36-0, 30 KOs) will take on Mexican left hooker Oscar Blanquet (32-6-1, 23 KOs) in an overweight flyweight bout.
WBA #2 lightweight, formerly two-division champ Jorge Linares (34-3, 22 KOs), a Japan-based Venezuelan, might be disappointed at his target WBA defending champ Richard Abril’s injury and cancellation of his title shot, but will display his good preparation against a substitute named Francisco Contreras (21-3, 16 KOs) from Dominican Republic over ten frames.
Also former two-time world champ, Japanese lightweight southpaw Takahiro Ao (24-3-1, 11 KOs) will cope with Mexican Edgar Lomeli (14-3-2, 8 KOs) over ten.
This deluxe show will be presented by Akihiko Honda’s Teiken Promotions and will be shown nationwide by WOWOW cable television.
