The WBC will celebrate a milestone beginning this weekend as it kicks off it’s 50 th anniversary celebration with start of the 50th Annual World Convention in Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico. The majority of scheduled events and meetings will take place at the expansive Grand Oasis Resort. Arguably, the most recognizable face in the world, thee time heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali will literally be crowned “King of Boxing” in a special ceremony to be held during th week.
Along with the usualy business of boxing being conducted by members of the WBC board, (rankings, mandatory defenses, officials seminars, rules, etc.), there will be two boxing events, the first of which is Saturday at the beach outside the hotel, banquets, and more. Over one thousand delegates and guests are expected to attend. In addition to Ali, several past and present world champions are confirmed to attend the convention such as current champs Abner Mares, Danny Garcia, Vitali Klitschko, Afren Torres, Jeff Fenech and even non-WBC champions including Nikolai Valuev and Alfonso Zamora just to name a few. Said WBC Executive Secretary Mauricio Sulaiman, “We expect the WBC’s 50th anniverary to be the biggest and best convention yet. It is a milestone celebration that is sure to be a knockout success.”
The offical run of the convention is December 2-8, although many delegates will begin arriving Friday, November 30th.
