WBC: Canelo must face Lara-Martirosyan winner

By Gabriel F. Cordero

WBC super welterweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has recently mentioned facing major rivals such as Floyd Mayweather Jr., Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez and others, but on Tuesday WBC President Jose Sulaiman stated that the next defense of “Canelo” Alvarez must be against the winner of Saturday’s bout between Vanes Martirosyan and Erislandy Lara at Wynn Las Vegas.

“Saul is a boxer who is in the major leagues. He is an idol who has pursued his career the right way, even facing and defeating Shane Mosley. He is a disciplined, dedicated and committed boxer. It is a fact that he has the maturity to face the best pound for pound, Floyd Mayweather or to Jr. Sergio Martinez. But Saul is committed to a mandatory fight with either Vanes Martirosyan or Erislandy Lara, who will be fighting next Saturday for the chance to challenge the world champion. After that “Canelo” can choose who will be his next opponent,” Sulaiman said.
