WBC honors Mildenberger

Heavyweight favorite Karl Mildenberger was honored by the WBC in his hometown of Kaiserslautern, Germany on Sunday. A long time before Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko thought about filling sports stadiums in Germany, Mildenberger fought the greatest of all time, Muhammad Ali, in front of 40,000 people in Frankfurt’s soccer stadium in 1966. As well as Ali, Karl also shared the ring with famous heavyweight names such as Oscar Bonavena, Henry Cooper, Zora Folley and Billy Walker. Karl “The Great,” pictured here with his friend Roman Kolaczek, won the European heavyweight championship in 1965, a year before he gave Ali the toughest fight of his career up to that point. He was delighted to accept the WBC mini belt on Sunday. “It’s amazing that people like Mr. Sulaiman and the WBC haven’t forgotten champions like me,” he said. “I’m very honoured to receive this belt today. Mr. Sulaiman is a man with a big heart and I send him my warmest regards. This is another fabulous day in my life”

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
