Mauricio Sulaiman spoke with Fightnews.com about the recent boxing accidents. He expresses his best wishes to all boxers struggling to recover and sent the following WBC statement info:
The World Boxing Council brought up in one of their meetings during the recent annual convention held in Bangkok, Thailand, the urgent need for further studies, and monitoring of the implementation of existing rules to protect the physical integrity of the fighter. Just as it developed during the convention were three cases of accidents in the ring, the tragic death of Frankie Leal, Hernan “Tyson” Marquez being taken out on a stretcher, and the serious injury suffered by the Russian Magomed Abdusamalov in New York.
There are several factors that increase exponentially the possibility of accidents in the ring, mainly preexisting injury, poor physical condition, excessive weight reduction and uneven fights which are limiting factors leading to accidents and generate resistance inside the ring .
The WBC medical committee has prepared its work plan for 2014 and will be in open and constant communication with National Federations, state commissions, and especially with promoters, managers and matchmakers to address these issues together.
The WBC has been careful to insure quality gloves, these must be certified. WBC doesn’t accept the gloves are of very poor quality, which have greater impact with dangerous effects. We need to strengthen medical examinations that apply to fighters, We need to monitor their activities and life outside the ring. It requires total respect to the suspensions imposed by source and review committees carefully when hiring fighters to fights, especially when they are emergency hires at the last minute.
