WBO gives back to kids

wbologoSome 564 youths, ages 8 to 13, from Puerto Rico and the neighboring islands of Curacao and St. Croix, filled the Sports Complex of Cupey last week to celebrate the WBO’s 8th Youth Sports Invitational.

The Youth Sports Invitational is an annual event that is sponsored by the WBO Kids Drug Free Program which promotes the physical, mental and ethical development of youth through the use of sports.

_mg_5277The Grand Marshall of the event was WBO junior flyweight champion Ivan Calderon. Also showing their support were WBO jr bantamweight champion José “Carita” Lopez and WBO jr lightweight champion Roman “Rocky Martinez. WBO President Francisco Valcarcel plus Marie Batista, the Sports and Recreation Director, handed out the prizes.

_mg_5302Officials José H. Rivera, Roberto Ramirez, Roberto Ramirez Jr. and Luis Pabon, as well as WBO Executives, Mario Rivera Martino, Manuel Marrero Hueca, Adolfo Flores, and Norma Nieves were also present. Cash incentives and 20 bicycles were the coveted prizes.

It was, as every year, a fun filled activity, where the youth showed their prowess in different track and field competitions.

    Help Support®

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
