Maryland card on, despite snow

By Gary “Digital” Williams

Despite a sudden weekend snowstorm that hit the Washington, DC area Saturday morning, the card slated for Sunday, January 31st is still on at Rosecroft Raceway in Fort Washington, MD. The card is promoted by Baltimore Pro Boxing.

The main event on the card has undefeated Baltimore, MD middleweight Cecil McCalla facing Forest Heights, MD’s Jayson Champion in the eight-round contest. McCalla (9-0, four KO’s) has not fought since June 19 when he stopped Jorge Barajas in the sixth round at Michael’s Eighth Avenue in Glen Burnie, MD. Champion (4-4, three KO’s) has been off since he lost an eight-round unanimous decision to Jessie Nicklow in June of 2008 at Du Burns Arena in Baltimore.

The two co-feature bouts should be good ones. In a heavyweight rematch, undefeated Maurice “Freight Train” Byarm of DC (5-0, three KO’s) will take on Maurice Winslow of Wilson, NC (3-10-1, three KO’s). Byarm won the first contest by four-round unanimous decision on July 25 but hurt his arm in the process. Byarm, however, has fought twice since that contest while Winslow has not been back in the ring.

Also, in a super middleweight battle also scheduled for six rounds, Scott “Cujo” Sigmon of Bedford, VA (7-1, three KO’s) battles Ariel “Iron” Espinal of Brooklyn, NY (6-11-3, two KO’s). Ironically, this bout was slated to take place in December in Pennsylvania but was postponed because of a big snowstorm. Sigmon (7-1, three KO’s) won by third-round TKO over Nicholas Schleich on August 29 in Lynchburg, VA. Espinal (6-11-3, two KO’s) fought his last bout against Julius Kennedy in November of 2009 and lost a six-round decision.

The long-awaited debut of Ferndale, MD cruiser and former amateur standout “The American Child” Nick Kisner will finally take place as Kisner battles against “The African Warrior” Francois Ambang of Mechanicsville, VA (2-4-1). Kisner has had three previous debut opportunities cancelled because of opponent difficulties.

Another former amateur champion — heavyweight Abodurin “Bo” Akinyanju of Springdale, MD (2-0, two KO’s) will battle Montgomery, AL’s Kevin Howard (1-2-1). Also, the returning Zain Shah of Centreville, VA (1-0, one KO) will face Frederick, MD’s Allen “Pitbull” Perkins (1-2). Both will be four-round contests.

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
