What about Pascal-Bute?

Dave Spencer

By Dave Spencer / Fightnews Canada

With the question on the lips of every Montreal fight fan being ‘What about Pascal-Bute?,’ Fightnews went directly to Jean Bedard who heads up InterBox, Lucian Bute’s promoter. Bedard is due to meet up with Pascal’s promoter, Yvon Michel within the next week. Read on about what the promoter has to say about the potential mega-fight and when it is likely to place. Bedard also discuses the possibility of unification for Bute as well as a potential opponent for Jean Pascal.

You were at ringside last Saturday, what were your impressions of Jean Pascal?

“I’m very happy, it shows that we have good boxers here in Canada and that the people from the U.S. will start to be serious about what’s going on here.

Of the course the question on everybody’s lips is what about a Pascal-Bute fight? What’s your point of view on the subject?

For us right now it’s to keep Lucian at 168. We’ve had several offers to fight against (Tavoris) Cloud and we met with Dawson’s promoters when they were here too. I told them we want to be 168 and that we’ll await the winner of the Super Six as well. It’s the same for Jean Pascal. This is what we’re going to tell Yvon (Michel). It’s a fight that’s going to happen, but not in the short term.

Is there a danger of doing that knowing how fast things can change in boxing? We almost saw that in the Andrade fight with one punch.

It’s not a question of one punch. We feel that Lucian will beat Pascal, we’re sure of that. But when you go up you make sacrifices and it’s tough to come back down and be a good performer at 168. Usually there is two reasons when you go up, the first one is you can’t make the weight which is not our problem right now. The other one is when there is nothing to do in your category so you move up for a better category, which is not the case either. There are more potential good fights for Lucian at 168 right now than at 175. Anyway, this fight will be there, if we’re smart we can do something. Lucian is just beginning to popular in the U.S. and Jean nobody knew him before last Saturday. We have two champions right now and we can do it bigger on a world level. That’s why the timing isn’t here yet on this fight.

Presuming that Lucian gets by his mandatory in Brinkley, are there any opponents left for him?

We’re now talking to the promoter of Stieglitz and Sartison. Sartison is the WBA and Stieglitz is the WBO. We want to bring one of them here and unify the title with Lucian. Then in the spring you’ll have four of the six top super middleweights from the tournament. We could have a guy like Kessler who is available or Abraham. Those would definitely be good fights.

So what are we looking at for a time frame? 2012 possibly?

If we want to finish the work at 168, we’ll need the 2011 year and wait for the winner of the Super Six. I think therefore 2012 is a much better period to possibly stage this fight.

Are you worried about either fighter losing and leaving all that money on the table?

There will always be money there. There is no big money right now from HBO that I know of and if we wait, it will only be bigger. And in Quebec, people will always want to see this fight. Even if Pascal loses, people will want to see this fight. I think there is a risk to wait a little bit, but I think there is more leverage if we decide to wait. It will be good for boxing.

Let’s talk about the 175 pound category. Kery Davis of HBO came up after the fight and said Diaconu did a lot better against Pascal than Dawson did. For him, Diaconu, a fight against Tavoris Cloud could be fireworks. I think there are guys who can help build this mega-fight. I think if Pascal was to face off against Andrade or guys like this, it would be an interesting fight and it makes the (Bute –Pascal) fight bigger. That’s where we are right now.

Tell me about Andrade? Do you have any sort of promotional agreement with him?

We have options on his next fight in Canada. So maybe we can explore that possibility as well.

Since Pascal does have an optional fight before Dawson, could we possibly see Andrade versus Pascal?

This would be interesting, don’t you think?

We can see what Jean Pascal can do against Librado and it would be interesting for the fans.

So we’re already seeing signs of the eventual showdown building and building.

That’s right; I think this fight is a good possibility

Thanks for your time; we’ll be talking before Lucian’s card in October.

Absolutely, we’ve got some real interesting things for the undercard, so we’ll be talking soon.
