Williams-Botha Update

What would another day be without more developments in the aftermath last Friday’s Sonny Bill Williams-Frans Botha fight? The latest is that referee Tony Kettlewell has added some credence to Botha’s bribe claims. “(Botha camp member and former world champion Philip Holiday) just said (Botha) was offered so much money to throw the fight and he refused to,” Kettlewell told AAP. Kettlewell said he reported the incident to Steve Marshall, one of the three judges working the fight, but no one informed head official John Hogg, who stated “Nobody said anything to me. It certainly was not brought to my attention.” He added, “It all sounds a little bit fanciful.”

Meanwhile, back in South Africa, Botha told SAPA “I landed in South Africa on the Sunday, and the next day I went for the tests, and it came back clean. I sent the results back to Australia and New Zealand for them to see for themselves. The only people who could have done those tests were the Australian Boxing Commission, and they didn’t even do it.”

Botha also stated that the WBA’s Stanley Christodoulou told him “there could be no WBA title fight with only 10 rounds,” although this is certainly not the case as WBA “International” title fights commonly go either ten or twelve rounds without any set pattern. In any event, Botha wants a rematch. “There are already talks that the fight will be in December in South Africa,” he said, “and I am hoping for one in Durban.”

For 18 years, Fightnews.com® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
