The New Jersey Athletic Control Board has no plans to review or change the result of Saturday’s controversial fight between former two-division world champion Paul Williams and Erislandy Lara, although commissioner Aaron Davis will discuss the scoring with judges Al Bennett (114-114), Don Givens (115-114) and Hilton Whitaker III (116-114). HBO’s Harold Lederman scored it 117-111 for Lara.
Williams was busy as usual, throwing 1047 punches to Lara’s 530. But Lara connected at a 49% clip while Williams landed 21% and Lara repeatedly landed the cleaner shots.
Bennett and Whitaker both had Williams ahead by one entering the final round, while Givens had “The Punisher” leading by two. Whitaker and Givens both scored round twelve 10-10, with Bennett giving the final stanza to Lara.
