Wlodarczyk defeats Green

Photos and report by Brett Bonetti

Krzysztof Wlodarczyk (46-2-1, 36 KOs) retained his WBC World Cruiserweight Title when he defeated a game Danny Green (31-5, 27 KOs) via TKO in Round 11 at Challenge Stadium, Perth Australia tonight. Danny Green was leading all judges’ scorecards with scores of 97-93 on two cards and 96-93 on the third at the time of the stoppage. Green started the fight the stronger and seemed to building a good lead on points especially with a great fifth round that had Wlodarczyk on the back foot.

The 10th round was the turning point in the fight as Wlodarczyk began to find his range and landed a blow that had blood streaming from Green’s nose.

Green still looked set to hold on and claim the WBC title on points from Wlodarczyk, but in the 11th round Green was getting tired and Wlodarczyk landed a big hit that had him hurt. Then Wlodarczyk followed up with a left blow that knocked Green down. Green barely beat the count and was on unsteady legs, and referee Michael Griffin decided to stop the fight.

Wlodarczyk admitted he had started the fight slowly and knew he needed a knockout to retain his title.

“I think I felt less pressure on me boxing away from home” Wlodarczyk said.

Green was gracious in defeat, congratulating Wlodarczyk on his win

“I took on the best Cruiserweight in the world and was four minutes away from a fairytale,” Green said

Green would not be drawn on whether the fight would be his last but said “I know one thing, when I retire, I’ll go out with my shield”.

“I’ve had an amazing career, I don’t know what I’m going to do yet” Green said.

Chris John (46-0-2, 22 KOs) defended his WBA World Featherweight Title for the 15th time when he defeated durable challenger Stanyslav Merdov (32-8, 24 KOs).

The undefeated John dominated the fight from start to finish and it was a credit to Merdov for being able to go the distance after being hit with several Chris John power shots that would have stopped most.

Australian Will Tomlinson (18-0-1, 12 KOs) claimed the vacant IBO Super Featherweight title with a points decision over Alan Herrera (26-4, 17 KOs) from Mexico.

Both fighters were aggressive and never took a backwards step throughout a great contest. Tomlinson opened up a cut above Herrera’s right eye in the 10th round as he landed several blows. Tomlinson outboxed Herrera and landed the cleaner punches in the fight. Scores were 118-111, 117-111 and 116-112 for the new IBO Super Featherweight Champion Will Tomlinson.

In the other action, Matt Garlett won by unanimous decision over Justin Medora, Anthony McCracken won by 4th round TKO over Shane Tilyard and Daud Yordan claimed the IBO Asia-Pacific Featherweight title on points over Frankie Archuleta.

Three world titles were on the line on the same night.

“Return to Glory, was promoted by Green Machine Boxing at Challenge Stadium, Perth Australia.
