World rated Bennett stops Lamptey; Butterbean loses to 1-1 fighter

By Ray Wheatley — World of Boxing

WBO #7, WBA #13 jr welterweight Chad “Hollywood” Bennett (32-4-3, 23 KOs) stopped Ghana’s Ebenezer Lantel Lamptey (22-2, 17 KOs) in a scheduled twelve round bout on Saturday with WBA and WBO regional titles up for grabs at the Entertainment Centre in Newcastle, NSW, Australia. Bennett dropped Lamptey in round three and the referee crowned the Australian in round five to save the import from further punishment. Bennett’s promoter Vlad Wharton is chasing a title shot for Bennett with WBO champion Juan Marquez or WBA champion Danny Garcia.

Also, famed 46-year-old American heavyweight Eric “Butterbean” Esch (77-10-4, 58 KOs) suffered a stoppage loss to Aussie Kirk Lawton (2-1, 2 KOs). Butterbean injured his shoulder in round one and retired in his corner at the end of the round.

Promoter was Vlad Wharton of Millenium Events.

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
