WBC minimumweight champion Xiong Zhao Zhong (21-4-1, 11 KOs) recovered from a first round knockdown to retain his title by majority decision over #1 rated Denver Cuello (33-5-6, 21 KOs) on Friday night at the World Trade Centre in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Southpaw Cuello dropped Zhong with a straight left in the opening stanza, but apparently fought with a shoulder injury that virtually stopped him from using his right hand. Zhong battled his way back into the fight rocking Cuello in round four mostly pursued the one-armed Cuello around the ring after that. Cuello was cut by an unintentional headbutt in round nine and as per WBC rules, the uncut fighter is deducted one point. Scores were 113-113, 115-112, 113-110. The bout was the first world championship fight to be held in Dubai.
In the co-feature, light flyweight Wang Xin Hua (10-6-1, 0 KOs) won a six round split decision over Lionel Legada (15-5-1, 5 KOs). No scores announced.
