WBA#13/WBC#15 Akira Yaegashi (12-2, 7 KOs), 105, successfully retained his newly acquired Japanese minimumweight belt as he utilized his swift footwork and solid counters to pound out a unanimous decision (98-92 twice and 99-91) over OPBF#3 Japanese top contender Junichiro Kaneda (19-4-1, 12 KOs), 105, over ten fast rounds on Saturday night in Tokyo, Japan. Yaegashi’s constant move nullified Kaneda’s busy combinations, and his counters often caught the game but limited challenger all night. The fleet-footed champ accelerated his attack to have the methodical rival at bay down the stretch and confirm his victory.
Undercard: Unbeaten WBC#21 Go Onaga (14-0-1, 10 KOs), 114.5, a hard-punching southpaw handled by ex-WBC/WBA champ Hideyuki Ohashi, displayed a fine form in dropping Naohiro Yanagi (8-10, 4 KOs), 114.75, twice in the first and once more in the fatal round, impressively stopping him at 2:06 of the third session. Unbeaten ex-national high school champ Ryosuke Iwasa (5-0, 4 KOs), 118, a tall and young southpaw, scored a fine TKO win over OPBF#15 Indonesian bantam champ Falazona Fidal (49-19-1, 13 KOs), 118, at 1:04 of the seventh. Promoter: Ohashi Promotions.
