Zbik now mandatory challenger

Universum Box-Promotion

Unbeaten WBC interim world champion Sebastian Zbik (30-0, 10 KOs) will soon have the opportunity to remove the word “interim” from his title. The Universum fighter was made the official mandatory challenger for the winner of the November 20 clash between champion Sergio Martinez and Paul Williams in Atlantic City. This was confirmed by WBC general secretary Mauricio Sulaiman at the WBC Convention in Cancun, where Zbik and Universum co-promoter Dietmar Poszwa were both present. “This decision was overdue for a long time since I have been interim world champion for more than one year,” said Zbik. “I’m very glad to now the definitive assurance that I’ll get to fight the winner by March.”

He continued, “I now have a gigantic goal in front of me and this, of course, is the best motivation for everyday training. The days in Mexico were not only very impressive, but also a great experience. We were received fantastically and treated very well. I got to meet great boxers, even celebrated Miguel Cotto’s birthday with him.”

“It doesn’t matter who wins the fight on November 20th in Atlantic City, the bout against the winner will be in any case for Sebastian the fight of his life,” added Poszwa. “We are very glad that the WBC has made the decision and we’re thankful for this chance.”

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
