Jose Medina vs Jose Medina!

Wednesday, February 14, 2007

Will the real Jose Medina please stand up?

That question should be answered Friday, March 2, when Jose "El Macho" Medina, of Philadelphia, PA, and Jose "Stinger" Medina, of Tilton, NH, collide in a six-round junior middleweight contest at the New Alhambra, Swanson & Ritner Streets, next to Forman Mills in South Philadelphia.

Topping the eight-bout card is a 10-round junior welterweight match between Mike Stewart, of New Castle, DE, and Enrique Colin, of Guasave, Mexico. Stewart is 41-5-2, 23 K0s; Colin is 21-3-3, 19 K0s.

Univision/Telefutura will televise the Stewart-Colin fight, as well as the 10-round semifinal which features unbeaten Olympic bantamweight Abner Mares, of Montebello, CA, as part of its popular Solo Boxeo series."

But it's the bragging rights—or is it naming rights—in the all-Medina showdown, which could highlight the evening.

Both Medinas are looking to get their respective careers back on track.

Philly's "El Macho" is a walk-in styled slugger who has scored 10 knockouts on his 13-8 career record. He turned pro in 2002 and won his first nine fights, eight by knockout. As the level of opposition rose, "El Macho's" victories grew scarce. He has lost eight of his last 12, including setbacks to Nurhan Suleymanoglu, Shamone Alvarez and Miguel Figueroa. His best win in that streak came last June when he upset Marcos Primera, of Asheboro, NC, at the Sovereign Center in Trenton, NJ.

"El Macho" accepted fights on short notice, out of shape, and he admits he did it for the money. Now, he says, he needs to get serious and break his 0-2 record at the New Alhambra, where he lost to Figueroa and Clarence "Sonny Bono" Taylor. He is 31 years old.

Tilton's "Stinger" Medina makes his second trip to the New Alhambra. He boxed there opening night, May 14, 2004, and earned a four-round decision over Martin Cornejo, of Athens, GA.

A pro since 2003, "Stinger" has a 10-7 record, 4 K0s. In his last fight Sept. 13 in Manchester, NH, he K0d Robert Fredericks, pf Providence, RI, in six rounds. Four months earlier, on May 13, "Stinger" dropped an eight-round decision to England's Matthew Hatton, brother of world champion Ricky Hatton, who defeated Luis Collazo for a piece of the welterweight title on the same card at the Fleet Center in Boston, MA.

"Stinger" is 23 years old.

First fight at 7.30 pm and the TV portion runs from 8 to 10pm.

Tickets priced at $55 and $40 are on sale at the offices of Peltz Boxing Promotions (215-765-0922) and also can be purchased online at www.peltzboxing.com

The card is being promoted by Golden Boy Promotions, Peltz Boxing and Joe Hand Promotions.
