Kameda meets #4 Tahumil today!

February 23, 2007

By Joe Koizumi

Unbeaten WBC#27 ranked Daiki Kameda (7-0, 5 KOs), an 18-year-old hard-hitting prospect of Japan, will square off against unbeaten WBA#4 light-fly Vicky Tahumil (30-0-2, 9 KOs), Indonesia, today (Friday) in Sapporo, Japan.

Daiki, the younger brother of ex-WBA 108-pound champ Koki Kameda (who recently renounced his belt to move up to the 112-pound category), wishes to follow the 20-year-old Koki's footstep and have an ambitious crack at the world flyweight throne provided that he should defeat the Indonesian southpaw veteran.

The up-and-coming left-hooker decked an important triumph over much more experienced Mexican Valerio Sanchez by a close but unanimous decision in Tokyo last September to be ranked in the top 30 by the WBC. Daiki punches harder than his brother, if not so fast and skillful as Koki. He becomes tremendously popular among gal fans as he makes it a rule to sing a song in the ring after chalking up a KO victory. He is also a talented painter who draws posters of his shows by himself.

Tahumil, 32, is one of the three outstanding Indonesian fighters along with WBA feather champ Chris John and IBF minimum ruler Mohamed Rachman. He was once the PABA (Pan Asian Boxing Association) champ, though he renounced the regional belt. Tahumil had been waiting for an opportunity to fight for the WBA 108-pound belt, but his dream didn't come true and thus accepted this bout as he hopes to fight Koki Kameda in the near future should he acquire his second world diadem in the fly division.
