In a bout for the WBO interim super flyweight title, WBO #1 rated David “Severo” Carmona (19-2-5, 8 KOs) and #2 Warlito “Cowboy” Parrenas (24-6-1, 21 KOs) battled to a twelve round draw at the Centro de Usos Multiples in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico. Scores were 115-112 Carmona, 115-113 Parrenas, 114-114. The interim title fight was ordered by the WBO because world champion Naoya Inoue is out of action with a hand injury.

A clash between super welterweights Ramon “Inocente” Alvarez (21-4-2, 13 KOs) and “La Lamina” Richard Gutierrez (28-16-1, 17 KOs) was declared a no contest after a fourth round unintentional head clash left Gutierrez unable to continue. Alvarez is the brother of Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez.

Former WBA flyweight champion Hernan “Tyson” Marquez (39-5-1, 28 KOs) scored an eighth round TKO over game Jose Alfredo “Galletas” Tirado (27-16, 19 KOs) in a super flyweight clash. Marquez dropped Tirado at the end of round one and battered him until the bout was stopped in round eight. Time was 2:09.

Dariusz Sek is the new WBC Eurasia Pacific Boxing Council Light Heavyweight Champion. The 28-year-old southpaw from Tarnow (Poland) forced local hero Shefat Isufi to retire in the eighth round of their exciting and very entertaining EPBC title fight Saturday night at Circus Krone in Munich, Germany.

Sek started aggressively and won the first round, but Isufi quickly adjusted and took control dominating rounds two to four by forcing Sek into infighting and landing some heavy hooks.

After four rounds, Isufi was leading on all four score cards. However, Sek came back strong in rounds five and six by landing some hard body shots and wearing his opponent down. The Pole finally broke Isufi’s nose with a clean left hand in the seventh. Isufi seemed to run out of gas and was taking a lot of punishment in the eighth when referee Juergen Langos asked the ringside physician to check the Albanian’s nose which was heavily bleeding.

Isufi’s trainer and promoter Alexander Petkovic had seen enough and decided to throw in the towel after 1:24 minutes of round eight. After seven rounds, all three judges had the bout even at 67-67 (twice) and 68-68.

“Of course, it is disappointing but the health of my fighters is most important to me”, said Petkovic. “With the injured nose Shefat couldn’t breathe. It is always a tough call to end a fight – especially with a guy like Shefat who always wants to go on and who can always come back. But I wanted to save him from getting seriously injured. We hope that his nose heals fast. Then we’ll get back in the ring and prepare for a rematch. Hats off to Dariusz Sek who showed lots of heart and a great fight. He deserved the win. It was a great fight as long as it lasted and I think everybody who saw it wants to see the rematch, too.”

On the undercard, hot rising prospects James and Tony Kraft scored hard-fought decision wins over rugged journeymen Josef Obeslo (James) and Vladimir Idranyi (Slovakia). Just like Shefat Isufi, the Kraft brothers seemed to suffer from the summer heat in Munich. On the hottest day of the year in Germany, the temperature inside the ring was way above 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit). But in the end both James and Tony Kraft managed to stay unbeaten.

Unbeaten WBO #14 super flyweight Jamie “The Mexican” Conlan (14-0, 8 KOs) survived two knockdowns to score a ten round unanimous decision over Junior Granados (13-3-1, 8 KOs) on Saturday night at the National Stadium in Dublin, Ireland. In round seven, Granados dropped Conlan with a body shot, then referee Mickey Vann allowed Granados to batter Conlan with unanswered punches for at least 30 seconds before Conlan went down again. The bell saved the hometown fighter and he went on the finish the last three rounds to get a 96-92, 95-93, 95-93 win.

Earlier, unbeaten middleweight Tommy Langford (13-0, 4 KOs) scored a fourth round TKO over Julio Cesar Avalos (15-5, 7 KOs).

Middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin has flatly denied quotes attributed to him by a U.K. based website, which were picked up by numerous other media outlets. “These are not my words in this interview,” said Golovkin.

“It’s unfortunate that this interview was posted online and considered by many to be Gennady’s quotes, none of which are his statements,” added Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions. “We are currently conducting negotiations for Gennady’s next fight and will not be commentating on any speculation about opponents. We understand the extraordinary interest worldwide in Gennady and look forward to making an official announcement at the appropriate time,” concluded Loeffler.

The fabricated quotes had claimed Golovkin as saying Andre Ward turned down an HBO fight with him and also that Ward changed weights in the Olympics to avoid him.

It appears Floyd Mayweather will be stripped of the WBO welterweight title on Monday (July 6th) after ignoring a WBO deadline to give up his WBA and WBC junior middleweight titles. Mayweather, who won the WBO title against Manny Pacquiao, initially appeared miffed when the Bradley-Vargas fight was announced as being for the vacant WBO welterweight title.

“For Mr. Mayweather to pick up the paper and read that another promotional company has announced that it is staging a bout for the same WBO title that Mr. Mayweather won in the ring, currently holds and has not relinquished, was extremely disappointing to him and his team.” attorney for Floyd Mayweather, John R. Hornewer stated in a letter written to the WBO.

The WBO agreed to give Mayweather until June 1st to formally announce his intentions regarding the WBO belt. Mayweather’s team filed a response requesting an extension on the June 1st deadline, which was granted. However, Mayweather appears to have ignored the second deadline of July 3rd and has not responded to the WBO. The championship committee is expected to meet on Monday where they will most likely vote to strip Mayweather of his belt and name Timothy Bradley WBO welterweight champion (Bradley won the vacant interim title against Vargas).

“The 4:30 PM July 3rd deadline has passed with no response from Mr. Mayweather or his legal representatives,” WBO General Secretary Jose Izquierdo told Fightnews. “The WBO World Championship Committee will convene on Monday and proceed to resolve according to our rules and regulations.”

After recording another first round knockout last Saturday in Bolivia, WBC #16 rated heavyweight Bronco Billy Wright (48-4, 38 KOs) is ready for a top level opponent.

“Right now I’m at a stage in my career where I feel I’m ready to challenge anyone in the top 10,” said Wright. “I’m knocking out guys with winning records and I’m staying active, fighting constantly. I’m very grateful to the WBC for honoring my ranking. They’ve sanctioned all my title defenses as I hold their FECARBOX, Latino and United States (USNBC) Silver titles. I’ve delivered on every fight by knocking everyone out that they sanctioned. My goal is to to land a big fight before the year ends and I’m counting on the WBC to honor my ranking, forcing someone in the top 15 to fight me.”

Adding another first round KO to his record, Bronco Billy, who hasn’t tasted defeat since 1998, is inching closer to breaking the all-time record for first round knockouts held by Shannon Briggs at 33. Currently Wright has 29 first round KOs.

“I believe if I continue to win and win impressively, someone in the top ten will take me on.” Bronco Billy continued. “If not I’ll just have to keep knocking out everyone in my path till they accept my challenge. I’m going to stay busy regardless. This 50-year old man can’t be that scary can he? My message to all these young bucks is…Let’s get it on!”

Who in the WBC top 15 is up to the challenge?
