Unbeaten WBA welterweight champion Miguel Cotto (31-0, 25 KOs) won a twelve round unanimous decision over former three-time world champion Shane Mosley (44-5, 37 KOs) on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Cotto landed the better shots in round one and most of round two, however Mosley landed some good rights at the end of the second. Both landed big shots in round three with Cotto momentarily rocked by a right hand. More good exchanges in the fourth, slight edge to Cotto. Round five was close, but Cotto appeared to be taking control in the sixth. Mosley adjusted and tried boxing from the outside in a sloppy seventh round. The boxing continued in the eighth as Mosley moved and Cotto pursued...close round. Mosley hurt Cotto in the ninth round but Cotto fought back gamely at the end of the round. Mosley dominated the first half of the tenth, but Cotto rallied in the second half. Mosley pressed in the eleventh, but Cotto landed some great counterpunches to win the round. Possibly thinking he had the fight won, Cotto was staying out of range in the twelfth, although he landed two good rights. Scores were 115-113, 115-113, 116-113.

Former WBO welterweight champion Antonio Margarito (35-5, 26 KOs) impressively crushed Golden Johnson (25-9-3, 18 KOs) in round one to claim the vacant WBO intercontinental welterweight title. In his first bout since losing his title to Paul Williams, Margarito wanted to start fast and he did, dropping the outgunned Johnson three times before referee Wayne Kelley stopped the bout at 2:28.
WBC interim lightweight champion Joel Casamayor (35-3-1, 21 KOs) scored a controversial twelve round split decision over Jose Armando Santa Cruz (25-3, 14 KOs) to retain his belt. Santa Cruz scored a knockdown in round one, pressed the action and mostly outworked Casamayor. The champion, coming off a 13-month layoff and appearing to be a shell of his former self, prevailed 114-113, 114-113 on two cards while Santa Cruz won 114-113 on the third card.
Top Rank junior welterweight hope Victor Ortiz (20-1-1, 15 KOs) needed just 1:40 to destroy former world champion Carlos Maussa (19-5, 17 KOs). A short, flush left hand put Maussa down for the count.
Unbeaten featherweight Billy Dib (17-0, 9 KOs) scored a one-sided eight round unanimous decision over normally competitive Rogers Mtagwa (24-12-2, 17 KOs) by scores of 80-72, 79-73, 79-73.
Unbeaten junior featherweight Jesus Rojas (10-0, 8 KOs) scored a sixth round TKO (2:12) over Carlos Diaz (9-11-4, 7 KOs). Junior welterweight Michael Faragon (1-0) won a four rounder over Javier Garcia (2-2) by scores of 39-37 three times. Junior middleweight Ronny Vargas (4-0, 3 KOs) stopped Bryan Mullis (4-2-1, 1 KO) at :50 of round two.
