By Paolo Consiglio at ringside

On Friday night at the Ostia Lido in Rome, Italy, hometown favourite Fedele Bellusci (16-3-3, 6 KOs) stopped on cuts previously unbeaten David Makaradze (14-1, 7 KOs) of Georgia to retain the IBF-I/C title at 140 pounds. Bellusci, one of Italy's most unheralded boxers, showed great focus in the first half of the bout neutralizing Makaradze’s slow pressure with superior footwork and workrate, delivering an array of sharp counterpunches from various angles and bringing an accurate right uppercut into play whenever the opportunity arose. With the Italian's stamina seemingly fading, Makaradze gained momentum in the mid-rounds rushing in with vicious right hands. Bellusci had to weather some rocky moments but, after a very strong effort, he was able to deliver a perfect right hand of his own in the tenth round opening a nasty cut on the Georgian’s right eyelid - thus prompting the referee to halt the contest on the advice of the ringside doctor. Sergio Cavallari promoted, with RAISAT broadcasting live in Italy.
