Three co-features went the distance before an estimated 1,500 fans at the Genoveva Chavez Community Center tonight in Santa Fe, NM on the debut “Cinco de Mayo Trifecta” card of Double-D Enterprises. In the first co-feature Las Vegas jr. welterweight Shawn “the Educator” Gallegos (16-2, 5 KOs) outhustled El Paso’s Carlos Madrid (6-2, 2 KOs) through eight fast rounds. Madrid could not get close enough, often enough, to land his big left hooks. When the gap was closed, Madrid pounded Gallegos to the body, but, more often than not, it was Gallegos jabbing and moving, piling up points. At the end of eight, all three judges scored it 79-73 for Gallegos; NMBoxing/Fightnews scored it 77-75. In the second co-feature, Denver’s Donald Camarena (17-2, 9 KOs) won a lopsided decision over San Antonio's Franz Hantindi (10-7-2, 7 KOs) over ten rounds. Hantindi was game but outclassed by Camarena, who outslicked and toyed with his opponent. Scores were 100-90, 99-91 and 97-93. In the third co-feature, and final bout of the evening, an eight-rounder for the NABC lightweight title, Santa Fe favorite Jayla Ortiz (12-8-4, 3 KOs) pitched a shut-out to Leanne Villareal (1-7-1, 1 KO), winning a unanimous decision with 80-72 scores by showing an aggressive side to her slick fighting. At the end of the later rounds, she had Villareal in trouble. On the undercard: In a six-round war, Espanola’s Tony Valdez (6-2-1, 6 KOs) and Juarez’s Roberto Gomez (14-16-3, 10 KOs) battled to a draw. Valdez tried to keep it on the outside, boxing in and out while Gomez tried to make it a brawl, landing the better shots. Judges were in disagreement: 59-55 Gomez, 58-56 Valdez and 57-57 even. Albuquerque’s Matthew “Papitas” Esquibel (2-0, 1 KO) had a ridiculously easy time with ill-prepared and unskilled Jared Tafoya (0-2), stopping him by TKO at :27 of round one; and, in the opening bout of the night, Denver's Lillian Camarena (1-0, 1 KO) stopped San Antonio’s Isabel Manyseng (1-9) at :08 of the third round.
