Kani stops Palmer! Saturday, May 10 2008 By Ray Wheatley -- World of Boxing Queensland super middleweight Israel Kani (9-2-1) captured the vacant national title when he forced a fifth round stoppage over Kerey Palmer (7-2) at the Lake Kawana Community Centre, Kawana Waters, Queensland, Australia on Friday. The 35-year-old Kani met solid resistance from Palmer, 25, and the fight was boxed on even terms throughout the first four rounds. Referee Brad Vocale crowned Kani the winner at 2:42 of round five. Kani was in very good shape for this contest having had former two-time world challenger Shannan Taylor as a sparring partner. Kani said, " Taylor has a better jab than Mundine." Kani was coming off a loss on points to Robert Toomey in March but previously had defeated William Hadlow in November 2007. There is a rematch scheduled for Israel Kani to meet Palmer again on July 19 in Docklands, Melbourne, Victoria. For all the latest boxing news, click here.
