Before his fight tonight in the Windy City of Chicago, Miguel Hernandez took time to talk with Fightnews about his upcoming fight and his exploding fighting career. Dominic Pesoli and 8 Count Productions are set to bring a pro/am card to the DePaul Athletic Center located at 2323 N. Sheffield in the Lincoln Park area of Chicago on Friday, June 4th. Miguel Hernandez is set to fight for the Illinois Jr. Middleweight Title, and his son Joshuah will be fighting on the amateur portion of the fight card. Doors open at 7 PM with fights starting at 8 PM. Tickets are still available by calling (312)226-5800.

Miguel Hernandez was born on the North side of Chicago. His mother passed away when Miguel was 5, a tragic suicide that haunted Miguel and his family. Miguel's family in Puerto Rico on his mothers side insisted that Miguel and his sister come there to live. But the father refused, stating that it would be over his dead body that they leave Chicago.Miguel's father, a CTA bus driver, raised Miguel and his sister by himself. His father worked a lot, but they always watched boxing together. His father and uncle were both boxers, so it was eeply enrooted in the family.

Miguel played baseball in school, but depression resulting from his mothers death detracted from both sports and school studies. They eventualy moved to the south side of Chicago where Miguel got wrapped up in his friends, and got himself into a little trouble. "Nothing serious, I was never arrested or anything." states Hernandez. "I just had alot of anger inside that I wanted to get out. When my first son was born, I suddenly got focused. This was something that was important, and he was mine. I took responsibility for what he needed."

Miguel got into a motorcycle accident that made him seriously think about the implications that his actions had on his son and family. During the recovery process after the accident Miguel was working out, and his son Joshuah worked out with him. Joshua quickly got into it, and soon Miguel got them into Windy City Gym to work out. As Miguel was training his son, he was approached by Windy City's famed trainer Sam Colonna, and asked if he himself had any interest in fighting in an amatuer fight.

"I turned to my son and asked him what he thought. Joshuah looked at me and said 'Sure Dad, I'd like you to fight.'" When Miguel started fighting in the amateurs he was almost 220lbs. Miguel quickly realized that he was much shorter than the other heavyweight fighters. Hel dropped down to Light Heavyweight for a few amatuer fights. Incredible work through both Sam Colonna, and Dr. James Stoxen of Team Doctors brought Miguel down safely to his fighting weight of 160lbs. "I am now at Middleweight and I plan to drop down to Jr. Middleweight for my next couple of fights" says Hernandez, who is coming off an impressive decision win against tough punching veteran Luis Lopez just a few weeks ago.

You just switched promoters. Did you feel that this was a necessary change? or just  a matter of business?

It was nothing personal. I have nothing bad to say about Bobby Hitz. It was just a business decision. I felt that Dominic Pesoli and 8 Count Productions could bring me a larger fan following, and more opportunites to fight.

Who would you most like to fight in the future?

I just want to fight for a World Title. It doesn't matter who, just a title fight. I know that I started boxing late in life, but I've never abused my body. Never done drugs, smoked or drank. I am fit and in great shape.

Your son Joshuah is scheduled to fight on this same card, but on the amateur portion. Can you tell us about him?

My son is Joshuah Miguel Hernandez. Anytime that anybody watches him spar or shaddow box, they comment that he is destined to be a future champion! I am more excited for his fight than my own. I think that this will be the first time in Illinois history that a father and son have competed on the same card.

How long before you feel sufficiently ready to fight in a World Title fight?

That's up to my trainer and promoter. They are watching me closely. I qam very active, 12 fights in one year. I'm healthy and always in shape. So, when they line up a title shot, I will be ready.

You have had a busy year since turning pro. What pace do you plan on maintaining for this coming year?

Then number of rounds that I am fighting is increasing. This is my first 8 round fight. It all depends on how long the fight goes and if I don't get banged up too much. I could be fighting again in July. So, it depends upon the outcome of the fight. If I could get another 6 fights this year, that would be great.

How do you rate yourself compared to the other top 10 fighters in your weight class?

Right now I wouldn't be ready to fight a top 10 fighter. It's too early in my career for that. I still have alot to learn. With some more experience and training, I know that one day I will be ready to beat the best of them. My trainer and promoter along with Dr. Stoxen of Team Doctors have helped alot. I know that one day soon I will be ready.

How would you classify yourself? As a boxer, puncher,or brawler? And do you hope to develope your style more in the future?

My first few fights I was more of a puncher. But with this last fight, I showed people that I could box. I ducked and evaded alot of punches with head movement. I want to mix it up. A fighter is someone who can box when he needs to, and punch when it counts.

I want to thank Sam Colonna and Sr. Stoxen at Team Doctors. Without their help I would not have been able to be at this weight and be in the shape that Im in. I have a number one team with them behind me!
