Linares, Juarez in crossroads war

By Chris Cozzone

In what can only be described as a crossroads fight, former two-time champ Jorge “El Nino de Oro” Linares (28-1, 18 KOs) and four-time title challenger Rocky Juarez (28-6-1, 20 KOs) are prepared for a war on the July 31 HBO PPV-televised card headlining Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Juan Diaz II. Both spoke out today during a national teleconference:

“This isn’t my first crossroads fight,” said Juarez. “This is a must-win for me. I need to prove to myself and to the boxing public that Rocky Juarez is not done. I am still in the game. I’m a young, old veteran who is still hungry and still trying to achieve my lifelong goal of becoming a world champion. Jorge Linares is a good opponent to get me back to a title shot.”

“To call it a ‘crossroads fight’ is well put,” said Linares, who considers Juarez his toughest opponent to date. “Juarez is a tremendous gladiator at the top level . .. but so am I. My speed, skill and technical attributes will be the same, if not better, than I’ve shown in the past. Because of this, the bout will be a great fight and whoever wins can go on to a world title.”

Stay tuned for a full report in the morning.

JC Gomez on Universum card

Universum Box-Promotion has announced that former WBC cruiserweight champion Juan Carlos Gomez (47-2, 36 KOs) will fight on their big July 31 card in Hamburg. It will be “The Black Panther’s” first bout under the Universum banner in five years. “We are delighted for Juan,” said promoter Klaus-Peter Kohl. “He was with us all those years and always remained connected. I believe in him. He can tear up the heavyweight division once again. He only has two defeats. Although he’s 36 years old, look at 39-year-old Vitali Klitschko and you can see how long you can still get maximum performance. He just has to want it. He must work closely with our training diagnostician. Everything will checked out. This is no picnic for Juan. It’s in his hands!”

Gomez stated, “I had some problems with my old promoter, so I called my first promoter who made me a world champion. Today I can appreciate how Peter Kohl was always fair to me. Now I’ll be returning to my boxing home. I’m glad that he gave me another chance and I can box on July 31. I’ll be diligent and won’t disappoint my fans. I still want to fight the best. After all, I have less defeats than Wladimir Klitschko…” (more…)
