Warren floats Brook vs Jones

It was just officially announced yesterday that undefeated top-rated welterweight contender Mike Jones will be defending his NABA and NABO belts against Jesus Soto-Karass in the TV opener on the November 13 Pacquiao-Margarito PPV telecast. However, promoter Frank Warren has approached promoter Bob Arum and the WBO about making a fight for the interim WBO welterweight title between the WBO #2 rated Jones and #1 rated Kell Brook in London this December instead. Brook is already talking about it. “If it’s going to be Mike Jones next, then bring him on. I’ve got no fear of anyone that Frank puts in front of me. I look at his record and his long list of knockouts and I know that it would be one hell of a fight, but I know I would come out on top.”

Braehmer-Cleverly heats up

WBO mandatory challenger Nathan Cleverly has fired a warning shot to WBO light heavyweight champion Jurgen Braehmer after Braehmer questioned Cleverly’s punching power following his win over Karo Murat in Birmingham. “I thought Murat was very weak, he had no chance,” Braehmer told the BBC. “Cleverly landed loads of punches, but without any real venom. It will not, I can assure you, be so easy against me.”

But unbeaten Clev now wants to give Braehmer a taste of his punches. “It really made me laugh when I read Braehmer’s quotes,” said the Welshman. “I’ve stopped my last seven opponents, and it will be eight if Braehmer plucks up the courage to get in the ring with me.” (more…)

Report by David Nelmark
Photos by Ed Mulholland

Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir knocked out former Pride Open Weight Champion Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic this past Saturday in the main event of UFC 119 at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The first fourteen minutes of the bout featured mostly clinches and parries, but Mir ended the evening with an exclamation point, putting Cro Cop flat on his back with a vicious right knee at 4:02 in round three.

Mir was wary of Cro Cop’s famed head kicks and Cro Cop was wary of Mir’s jiu-jitsu. The resulting caution created a close, but uneventful fight. Indeed, the only knockdown prior to the finish came via an inadvertent knee to the groin by Cro Cop  . . . Click here for more

Briggs furious at Vitali

Former heavyweight champion Shannon Briggs (51-5-1, 45 KOs), who will face WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko on October 16 at the O2 World Arena in Hamburg, Germany, is outraged by Klitschko allegedly calling asthma a good excuse. “There are 300 million people in the world with asthma and not one of them would agree with Vitali Klitschko that it’s nothing serious,” said Briggs, a lifelong asthma sufferer. “Isn’t he supposed to be a doctor? A doctor of what???

“I have been in the trenches of this deadly disease and seen the heartbreak it causes,” he continued. “I spend every day trying to convince young people stricken with it that they can be anything they want in life, despite their challenges. What the world doesn’t need is someone who’s supposed to be a role model dismissing their condition as no big deal. These kids are not faking and neither am I. I am now personally dedicating my knockout punch to the sufferers of asthma worldwide that Vitali has offended. I plan on being a three-time world champion who respects people and their challenges.”

You can do a monthly PPV, a bi-weekly HBO fight, you can have the best fighters fight each other. When you have five or six promoters, it’s very difficult.” Read the entire interview…

Berg shocks WBO #3 Zegan

UBP

In a light welterweight bout, unbeaten but unheralded newcomer Boris Berg (4-0, 2 KOs) won a shocking six round decision over reigning WBO European champion and world rated #3 Matt Zegan (42-6-1, 21 KOs) on Sunday evening at the “Altes Funkwerk” in Berlin, Germany. Against all odds, the 34-year-old Berg impressed with offensive boxing and brought pressure to bear on Zegan from the first round. Berg’s variety was excellent, and his punches to the head and to the body looked precise and powerful as the former WBO lightweight challenger Zegan never found his way into the match. The card was promoted by IFKO Box Promotion.
