Martirosyan defeats Daari

By Alexey Sukachev

WBO #6 middleweight Gennady Martirosyan (20-2, 9 KOs) retained his WBO Europe title for the first time after a hard-fought stoppage of comebacking French veteran Aziz Daari (24-13-4, 20 KOs) on Saturday night at the Atmosphere Night Club in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Martirosyan didn’t show his usual aggressiveness but preferred to fight in Abraham-like style by boxing in spurts and covering in a shell-like defense for the rest of the time. Bigger and stronger Daari gave Martirosyan some scary moments in the midst of the fight when it seemed Gennady was gassing out quickly. He, however, found some intrinsic resources and increased his tempo after the seventh round. Round eight was all Martirosyan; in the ninth stanza Daari charged forward and had some mild success which proved to be his last stand in the bout. In round ten, Martirosyan marched forward and finally landed a huge left uppercut, which forced the Frenchman down after a few more blows on accumulation of punches. Heavily bleeding, Daari wobblingly stood up and survived the round only to retire on his stool during the break. Fightnews had it 96-94 – for the Russian at the time of stoppage. (more…)

In the co-feature, “Mighty” Mike Tiberi (12-1, 5 KOs) took a hard fought unanimous decision over Michael “Show Time” Raynor (6-15, 5 KOs) in a six round middleweight bout. Arce to face Mijares April 10

Francisco “Panchito” Arce has a score to settle with former world champion Cristian Mijares on April 10 at the Palenque de la Feria de Durango in Durango, Mexico. Arce (30-5-2, 21 KOs) and Mijares (38-6-2, 17 KOs) meet in an elimination bout for the WBC bantamweight championship. Two exciting, unbeaten young fighters meet for the vacant WBO junior featherweight title in the main event on Saturday’s Double Assault PPV show when Wilfredo Vazquez Jr., with a Puerto Rican crowd behind him and his ex-champ father in his corner, faces his stiffest test against Filipino Marvin Sonsona. The fight will be preceded by the Rodel Mayol-Omar Nino Romero championship bout in Mexico, but the Vazquez-Sonsona bout is the one that I am awaiting with the greater sense of anticipation. See it tonight on pay-per-view

By Graham Houston

Unfortunately, some discord has developed concerning Rodel Mayol’s WBC light-flyweight title defence against Omar Nino Romero in Mexico on Saturday night. The Filipino camp has expressed concerns about getting fair treatment in Romero’s hometown of Guadalajara, and the WBC has responded by expressing surprise and pointing out that the organisation stood behind Mayol when he won the title in highly controversial fashion against Edgar Sosa in Mexico last November.

There will be a neutral referee, Vic Drakulich, of Nevada, plus three U.S. judges. (more…)

Tete wins IBF flyweight eliminator

By Ron Jackson

In a rather dull affair Zolani Tete outpointed Richard Garcia from the Philippines by wide margins in an IBF flyweight title eliminator at the Nasrec Indoor Arena, Johannesburg on Friday night. The scores were 118-108 and 118-110 twice as Tete qualified to challenge compatriot Moruti Mthalane for the IBF title. The taller Tete (13-0, 11 KOs) who fights from the southpaw stance worked his way to victory as he boxed from the outside against the tentative Garcia (20-10-1, 5 KOs) who hardly threw a punch in anger through twelve rather tedious rounds. Photo by Chris Cozzone

By Chris Cozzone & Gerardo Martinez at ringside

In a great fight, WBA #1/IBF #5 super bantamweight, WBO #3 featherweight Antonio Escalante (23-2 14 KOs) hammered out a hard fought ten round unanimous decision over rugged Mickey Roman (28-7, 20 KOs) in a featherweight turf war on Friday night at the Don Haskins Convention Center in El Paso, Texas. Escalante and Roman resumed their childhood fistfight with great fury from the opening bell. Roman relentlessly pressured the more mobile Escalante and both boxers landed big shots during vicious exchanges as the rounds progressed. Escalante finally dropped Roman with a barrage of punches in round eight. Roman stormed back in round nine, but Escalante took in the final round to win a 97-92, 96-93, 96-93 nod.

Arron wins Prizefighter

Lawrence Lustig

By Alexey Sukachev

Tall youngster Prince Arron (17-3-1, 1 KO) is a sensational winner of Barry Hearn’s and Sky Sports’ light middleweight Prizefighter tournament, which took place Friday night at York Hall, London. In the final Arron took some hard southpaw bombs from previously undefeated Brett Flournoy (11-1, 4 KOs) and was on the brink of defeat with just three minutes remaining. He rallied hard though and scored a decisive knockdown in the midst of the third on an accumulation of hard right hands, which sent his foe down on one knee. Flournoy got up and fought as hard as he could to cruise through Arron’s backfire. It wasn’t enough. Judges scorecards read as follows: 29-28, 29-28 and 28-27 – Arron. Fightnews saw it differently – 29-28 – for Flournoy who paid a huge price for his single mistake in the tournament. (more…)

Pacquiao on Clottey

With most of the questions pertaining to drug testing, retirement, Floyd Mayweather and politics, you wouldn’t have guessed that on March 13 in Dallas, Manny Paquiao will be stepping into the ring with Joshua Clottey.  “You cannot underestimate Clottey,” said Pacquiao. “He is older, and bigger than me, and a former world champ.”
– – – –
Trainer Freddy Roach on Clottey: “We’re not gonna be there when he’s counterpunching us. When he throws, we’re not gonna be there. He’s a big, strong guy but size doesn’t win fights – skill does. Joshua Clottey will not be a problem. Manny will overwhelm him with speed and combinations. He will be the first person to stop Clottey.”
– – – –
Pacquiao on Mayweather: “What I believe is that Floyd Mayweather is not ready for this fight, to face me. That’s why he makes up some reason to cancel the fight. I feel bad and disappointment, but this is boxing.” Stay tuned for a full report this weekend.
