Cruz retains belt at UFC 132

UFC bantam champ evens score with Faber

Octagonside by Anthony Springer Jr & Andreas Hale

Dominick Cruz fought like he had a chip on his shoulder. In a bout where the champ was treated like the challenger, Cruz avenged the lone loss on his record, defeating crowd favorite Urijah Faber via unanimous decision. The judges scored the bout 50-45, 49-46, and 48-47.

Chris Leben defeated the living legend Wanderlei Silva by knockout in just 27 seconds in the night’s co-main event; Dennis Siver earned a hard fought unanimous decision over Matt Wiman. All three  judges saw it the same and scored the bout 29-28 for the German; With his career on the line, Tito Ortiz earned his first victory since 2006, tapping Ryan Bader with a guillotine choke at 1:56 in the opening round; In the night’s first main card bout, Carlos Condit handed Dyong Yun-Kim his first professional loss. “The Natural Born Killer” caught the “Stun Gun” with a vicious knee and followed that up with a series of punches. Klitschko defeats Haye

By Karl Freitag

The biggest heavyweight title fight in years wasn’t an instant classic as IBF/WBO/IBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (55-3, 49 KOs) scored a one-sided twelve round unanimous decision over cautious WBA champion David Haye (25-2, 23 KOs) on Saturday night at the Imtech Arena in Hamburg, Germany. In round one, Haye threw lots of power punches but didn’t land clean. Wlad landed some jabs but nothing hard. More connects in round two for both and things heated up further in round three. Haye landed a clean shot at the bell to end round four. Good combination by Klitschko in round five. Haye stayed mostly on the outside, occasionally jumping in with single shots. Klitschko pressed the action and was busier in every round. Klitschko was deducted a point by Geno Rodriguez for pushing down Haye in round eight, but took control down the stretch. Rodriguez gave Haye a count after he went down in the eleventh. Haye landed a hard shot in the twelfth, but Wlad came back. In the end, scores were 117-109, 118-108, 116-110. Faber looks for repeat win

UFC 132 is LIVE on PPV TONIGHT!

Story by Anthony Springer Jr

Playing on the big stage is hardly new to Urijah Faber (25-4).

Though he’s headlining the first sub-155 pound fight in UFC history at UFC 132, “The California Kid” has been one of the sport’s biggest little men for some time now.

Faber will do battle with current bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz. Since the pair’s first meeting four years ago lasted just 1:38 and ended with Cruz being choked out. It’s the only blemish on his record . . . Click here for more

Migaki keeps OPBF 135lb belt

By Joe Koizumi

WBC#6/WBA#7 lightweight Ryuji Migaki (17-2, 13 KOs), 134.5, Japan, barely kept his OPBF 135-pound belt as he put on a see-saw extravaganza with OPBF#3 compatriot Shoji Kawase (27-4-5, 17 KOs), 134.5, and finally knocked him out with a smashing left-right combination at 2:31 of the tenth round in a scheduled twelve-rounder on Saturday in Tokyo, Japan.

It was a gory affair as each sustained bad lacerations around the optics caused by the other’s furious attack. The OPBF open scoring system indicated the process on almost even terms: 38-38, 39-38 and 38-39 after the fourth; 77-76, 77-75 both for the defending champ Migaki, and 76-77 for Kawase after the eighth. Kawase threw more punches with less precision, while Migaki scored with a fewer but more accurate combinations to weaken the game challenger. The fatal tenth witnessed Migaki explode a solid one-two combo to the button of the taller Kawase, who fell down not to be able to beat the count of the referee Vinny Martin. (more…)
