When WBA featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa steps into the ring against IBF champ Orlando Salido for his first title unification this Saturday (Sept. 11th, featured on HBO Boxing After Dark) at The Palms in Las Vegas, “El Ciclon“ knows exactly who to thank for the way his career has taken so far. “I have a fantastic team behind me,” said Gamboa in Vegas. “With my father Carlos who brought me to boxing and has always been a role model, my trainer Ismael Salas who I have known for many, many years, my promoter Ahmet Öner and my manager Tony Gonzalez who led me from my pro-debut to Las Vegas on the fast lane and the team of Top Rank who is doing a great job in putting together these wonderful shows I have the best team in my corner that a fighter can possibly have. But I also know that I wouldn’t be where I am right now if I wouldn’t work as hard as possible for my success.” (more…)

Former IBF/WBA super bantamweight champion Celestino Caballero (34-2, 23 KOs) of Panama and trainer Jeff Mayweather do a mit-hitting drill in Las Vegas where they are holding their training camp. Caballero may make his second consecutive appearance on HBO on November 27th in a televised featherweight co-feature at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Caballero is a very hungry fighter at this stage of his career and it shows in his work ethic. Caballero arrived in Las Vegas from Panama two months ago to begin training even though he did not have an official fight scheduled. “Celestino is looking very strong, sharp, and extremely fit. We are more than two months out for the fight and he is not far off of the fight weight already,” said Mayweather. The main event will feature WBA/WBO lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez (51-5-1, 37 KOs) defending his titles against interim WBO lightweight champion Michael Katsidis (27-2, 22 KOs).

After Amir Khan’s ridiculous demands have frustrated all the efforts to reach an agreement and especially since he is tired of all the lies that Khan himself and his team have told to the media and boxing fans in the last few weeks, last night Marcos Maidana requested the World Boxing Association (WBA) to immediately call the fight to a Purse Bid.
“I got fed up with this Twitter-star. He is the biggest liar and coward I’ve ever seen. He said I was asking too much money for the fight. False. But if he has a problem with the money, I challenge him to make a winner-takes-it-all bout. But that’s not his real problem. You wanna hear the latest news from him? Now he says I’m not his mandatory! So his lawyers are trying to get a way out of the fight with me,” Maidana said.
“I’ve asked my team to proceed with the request for the WBA to call the fight to a Purse Bid. Once the Purse Bid has a winner the fight has to be made. Then we’ll see who is lying here. Let’s see for real who wants to fight and who does not. Trust me, Amir Con would relinquish his title rather than face me, “El Chino” added.
