Paulie Malignaggi is the first to admit he didn’t think he would be getting another title shot. Not after fighting so poorly in defense of his old junior welterweight belt against Lovemore N’Dou in 2008. Not after losing it when he was dominated and stopped by Ricky Hatton later that year. And certainly not after controversially losing a close encounter with former titleholder Juan Diaz last summer. But yet there he was on Wednesday morning at Madison Square Garden, spouting off at the podium for his final press conference prior to his second title shot this weekend against WBA belt holder Amir Khan. The fight will be televised live from the theater at the Garden on HBO on Saturday night. For more details and photos click here…

Unbeaten former two-division world champion Zsolt Erdei (31-0, 17 KOs) reportedly announced his retirement – then hours later stated he was misquoted and is open to continuing his career if he receives an appropriate offer. After competing in the 2000 Olympics, Erdei won the WBO light heavyweight belt in 2004 and defended 11 times. He last fought in November, winning the WBC cruiserweight belt, which he later vacated. Erdei’s contract with Universum Box-Promotion expires at the end of June. He will turn 36 years of age later this month. Hat tip to Hungarian monokli.com.

The slick boxer’s next step will be heading to King’s training camp in Orwell, Ohio, with trainer Carlos Cartagena to spar and train with other DKP fighters. Madison is anxious and excited to get back into the ring as soon as possible. Madison is managed by Dave Bowers.

WBC/WBA super flyweight champion Vic “The Raging Bull” Darchinyan (34-2-2, 27 KOs) will clash with durable Filipino Eric “The Maverick” Barcelona (51-17-4, 19 KOs) over twelve rounds for the vacant IBO bantamweight title at the Parramatta Leagues Club, Sydney, NSW, Australia on May 20. Barcelona dropped a ten round decision in his most recent ring appearance when Kohei Oba outscored him in Japan in March. Darchinyan is confident of beating Barcelona. “I have never seen him fight but I heard he has never been stopped in 70 fights,” Darchinyan said. “I’m sure it will be a good fight. My training has been good and I am in good shape for this fight.” (more…)

To qualify for the Olympics, he defeated Mariano Carrera of Argentina (who would go on to fight for the WBA world title as a pro) then slick Dominican Republic fighter Jerson Ravelo. (more…)

BOB ARUM: I am back from one of the most exciting trips of my life and one of the most fulfilling trips. I am thinking now whether to pack it in as a boxing promoter and be a political consultant…but only in the Philippines and around the world. I don’t think there is anything more exciting and more interesting than politics and I really have to compliment Manny. People don’t realize that this victory over the candidate that he beat was a tremendous upset that very few people expected him to pull off. His opponent’s family holds all of the major businesses in this province. All the mayors and the congressman in the province are either related to this family belong to the family or are associates of the family. Manny Pacquiao was running against the elder son of the family and they hadn’t been defeated and won overwhelmingly in every election for 25 years. Manny Pacquiao is a fighter and with his grit and determination was not only able to win but to win by a landslide. (more…)
Five-time world champion and current International Boxing Federation junior middleweight champion Cory “The Next Generation” Spinks (37-5, 11 KOs) made some bold statements at Wednesday’s press conference at Chaifetz Arena in St. Louis announcing his title defense on June 12 against IBF No. 1-ranked mandatory challenger Cornelius “K9” Bundrage (29-4, 17 KOs). “My title is not leaving St. Louis,” Spinks declared. “I guarantee I will be undefeated for the rest of my career. When I get done with Bundrage, I’ll fight anyone: Floyd Mayweather, Manny Paquiao, Miguel Cotto, Paul Williams, Shane Mosley—you name it, I’m ready.” (more…)

Humberto “Zorrita” Soto will defend his WBC lightweight championship this Saturday against Ricardo “Pelon” Dominguez in the “Estadio Centenario” of Los Mochis, in the card “Puro Sinaloa, ¿Quién es el más Macho?” that will be the main event of “Top Rank Live” that will telecast in the United States by Fox Sports Net and Fox Sports en Espanol. Andre Ward (20-0, 13 KOs) and Allan Green (29-1, 20 KOs) said at a press conference Wednesday that they both support Olympic-style drug testing before their June 19 fight for Ward’s WBA title. The super-middleweights meet in Oakland, Calif., to conclude the Super Six World Boxing Classic’s second round. Dan Goossen, Ward’s promoter, supports the proposal and said he would discuss it with Lou DiBella, who promotes Green. Green, who appeared at the Oakland press conference via a video stream from Miami, Fla., said it would have hurt his training in nearby Fort Lauderdale to travel across the country and back for the event. Green, who replaces Jermain Taylor in Showtime’s tournament, has been boisterous in the pre-fight build-up, but the Tulsa, Okla., native and resident was low-key and quick to compliment Ward.
Jr middleweight contender and former welterweight champion Kermit Cintron has commented on his May 8th fight with Paul Williams. “About thirty seconds into round four, Paul Williams lost his balance and started falling to the canvas,” said Cintron. “Our bodies got tangled and while Paul just hit the canvas, my momentum carried me through the ropes and out of the ring. His falling is what caused me to be off-balance and all I could do was brace myself for impact. As I fell from the ring, I think I landed on a TV monitor. That collision actually knocked the wind out of me.” (more…)

Today in Moscow, a press conference was held by the team of unbeaten Alexander Povetkin (19-0, 14 KOs), the official IBF heavyweight challenger. Sauerland Event Managing Director Chris Meyer: “The IBF has established special terms during which we should agree with the Klitschko party. Our negotiations should begin on May 17th, at once upon termination of negotiations between Klitschko and Haye (Fightnews.com informed that negotiations for the Klitschko-Haye fight will be finished on Sunday). We have 30 days for negotiations. If we cannot finish them within thirty days, a purse bid will take place. Whoever offers more money will win. I’ve teen talking with very important people in Russia who want that fight was in Moscow. Kitschko-Haye probably will not take place in 2010 . We’re working on promoting Kitschko-Povetkin.”
Wladimir Hrunov, Povetkin’s manager: “We want that the boxers pass the WADA doping tests. It’s not a requirement, but a wish. It’s necessary to have this difficult negotiating process. This fight is waited for by millions fans of boxing in all countries. We would like Wladimir Klitschko to address the request for doping control in accordance with the WADA code. The doping history with the Floyd Mayweather – Manny Pacquiao fight has shown problems and has let us know that something in professional boxing should be changed. For today I do not have any doubts that Wladimir Klitschko does not take banned substances and goes through a competently organised training process and the mountain air doesn’t help him.”

Sources report that Golden Boy Promotions is trying to line up a clash between former two-division world champion Jorge Linares and reigning WBA interim super featherweight titleholder Jorge “Coloradito” Solís. Zanfer Promotions of Mexico represents Solis, who won a unanimous decision over Mario Santiago in his first defense last Saturday in Aguascaliente, Mexico. Linares is coming off a unanimous decision over Francisco Lorenzo in La Guaira, Venezuela on March 27, his comeback fight after losing his full WBA 130lb title by knockout in October 2009 to Juan Carlos Salgado, who subsequently was dethroned by Takashi Uchiyama.

Matchroom Sport has announced the line-up for the latest Prizefighter event. Barry Hearn’s next eight-man, one-night tournament – Prizefighter Super-Bantamweights – will take place at the York Hall, Bethnal Green, east London on May 29. The betting favorite will certainly be 39-year-old Wayne McCullough, a former WBC world champion at bantamweight who also fought for world titles at two other weights. However, favorites do not always win Prizefighter, as former WBO Heavyweight Champion Herbie Hide found out when he had to withdraw at the semi-final stage in Prizefighter Cruiserweights II last month.
Here’s the full lineup: Wayne McCullough (27-7, 18 KOs), Esham Pickering (34-9, 13 KOs), Craig Lyon (10-0, 3 KOs), Mark Moran (11-1-1, 3 KOs), Ricky Owen (11-0, 4 KOs), Gavin Reid (6-5-1, 3 KOs), Chris Riley (2-2-2, 0 KOs), Josh Wale (9-2, 5 KOs). Undefeated WBA lightweight champion Paulus “the hitman” Moses (25-0, 17 KOs) is hard at work in preparation to defend his title on May 29 at the Kalahari Sands Hotel in Windhoek, the capital city of his native Namibia. Moses will take on WBA interim lightweight champion Miguel Acosta of Venezuela (26-3-2, 20 KOs). Prior to Moses’ current reign of world champion, the biggest name fighter from his country was former world champion Harry Simon who owns a win over a primed Ronald ‘Winky’ Wright. Moses knows with a win over Acosta he can look for bigger opportunities against bigger names. Fightnews caught up with Moses at his training camp in his native Nambia. (more…)
