Kayode, Franco on ShoBox

Photos by Tom Casino/SHOWTIME

Lateef “Power” Kayode figures it’s just a matter of time before he is stopped by a stranger beyond the corner of Hollywood Blvd. and Vine near where he lives and is recognized for knocking people out in the ring.

The Top-10 world-ranked undefeated cruiserweight and Freddie Roach-trained Kayode (14-0, 13 KOs) is on the verge of breakout stardom and SHOWTIME® boxing fans will have another chance to catch this rising star on ShoBox: The New Generation, Friday, Dec. 3, LIVE on SHOWTIME® (11:05 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast) from the Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, Calif.

“I get recognized around my neighborhood but I want the world to know me now,” said the 6-foot-2, 27-year-old Kayode from Lagos, Nigeria, who will fight savvy veteran Ed “The Georgia Thumper” Perry (17-4-2, 10 KOs) of Frankfort, Ind., in a 10-round cruiserweight main event. “The more people who know me the better. Hopefully they will stop me now and say, ‘Hey, I saw you knock that guy out on SHOWTIME.’ ”

Drian Francisco (20-0-1, 16 KOs) became the WBA interim super flyweight champion as he scored a tenth round TKO over WBA #2 Duangpetch Kokietgym (52-2-1, 21 KOs) on Tuesday at the Bungkan school in Nongkhai, Thailand. This was an impressive victory of a hot Filipino prospect over an experienced Thailander who had not been beaten since 1997. This bout was a closed affair in the opening round with Francisco being considered a little better with his more accurate punches. But the show turned to Duangpetch starting in round two when he displayed vicious body attacks, although a low blow caused referee Steve Smoger to pause the contest for a minute in round four. Carl Froch speaks

Carl ‘The Cobra’ Froch and his coach Robert McCracken put together a master class performance which the power-punching strongman Arthur Abraham had no way of overcoming in Helsinki at the weekend. Froch, who moves into second place on the Super Six: World Boxing Classic scoreboard behind tournament leader and WBA champion Andre Ward, will now face veteran hard man Glen Johnson in the New Year.

“It was a satisfying and utterly dominating performance on Saturday night if I say so myself. Before the fight, the press and bookmakers were all split over the likely outcome between us.” Said Froch from his Nottingham home. “Arthur Abraham was seen as someone with a fantastic defence which was only bettered by his heavy hands. But I knew that if I could blow the cobwebs off my boxing skills and stay focused, there was simply no way he would beat me. I needed to make a statement and I think everyone will agree that Saturday’s effort was exactly that.” (more…)

Junior worked out for two hours under the eye of trainer Freddie Roach and conditioning coach Alex Ariza. “I was knocked down by a nasty flu, but thank God I was able to train this afternoon and I felt very good,” said Chavez Jr. “I’m taking a risk with the fight with Wolak, but I did a lot of preparation with a great trainer in Freddie Roach and his team and that gives me the confidence to move forward.” The Son of the Legend fell ill last week with a bad cold that prevented him from training for several days and put into question his fight with Wolak at the Honda Center.

Vicente destroys Perez

By Robert Coster

Promising Dominican Jr Featherweight, WBA #13, Jenifel Vicente (19-0-2, 13 KOs) excited the local crowd in San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic, with a brutal knockout of Colombian visitor Jonathan Perez (17-8, 14 KOs) in just two rounds on Monday night. Perez opted as a strategy to trade punches with Vicente, a muscular, bomb-throwing dynamo. And he sorely paid the price as the ever attacking Vicente landed a thunderous right hand on the young Colombian’s chin at the beginning of the second round. Perez just crumpled to the mat where he received the full count and laid prone for various minutes. With this explosive victory Vicente acquires the vacant WBA Fedelatin title.

The co-main event saw 2008 Olympic Champion Felix Diaz (8-0, 5 KOs) win a five round technical decision over tough Colombian veteran Edinson Garcia (17-11, 6 KOs). Diaz won every round but did run a good sweat as the game Garcia fought back gallantly until a slip in fifth round led to a torn or bruised muscle on the visitor’s thigh which effectively put an end to the fight. The scorecards then unanimously favored Diaz, as expected. The eight-rounder was disputed in the welterweight class. Diaz mentioned after the fight that he would now like to move to fighting the ten round limit.

Burgos back in Tijuana

Upon arriving to his hometown of Tijuana, Mexico, previously undefeated Juan Carlos Burgos (25-1, 18 KOs) reflected on his recent defeat in Nagoya, Japan, when he faced legendary Hozumi Hasegawa (29-3, 11 KOs) for the vacant WBC Featherweight title. After 12 brutal non-stop rounds, Burgos lost the fight on all three judges scorecards 117-111 (twice), and 116-111.

“I told all the reporters in Japan that I had no excuses, I fought a rough Japanese opponent that did the same as me, he gave it his all. I won’t take that away from him, he had a better night and his hand was raised at the end. But I disagree with a few things that happened during the fight; for one, I got a point deducted on the eighth round for a supposed unintentional head butt. Referee Roberto Ramirez Jr., saw it as a butt but it was a punch, a clean punch, that cut Hasegawa’s eye.” (more…)

Nate Campbell retires

Former unified lightweight champion Nate Campbell (33-7-1, 25 KOs) has decided to hang up his gloves after suffering a split decision loss to journeyman Walter Estrada (37-13-1) Saturday night on the Juan Manuel Marquez-Michael Katsidids HBO card in Las Vegas. Campbell got a late start in boxing, turning pro near his 28th birthday in 2000, but shocked the boxing world in 2008 by dethroning the then undefeated Juan “Baby Bull” Diaz in a bullring in CanCun, Mexico to win the IBF, WBO, and WBA lightweight titles. Campbell’s then promoter Don King’s inability to land a meaningful fight following the Diaz upset led to a year layoff and an eventual move to the jr. welterweight division where Campbell had a no contest with world champion Timothy Bradley and a decision loss to “vicious” Victor Ortiz.

The always colorful Campbell released the following statement after Saturday’s loss to Estrada:

“First of all, I want to let everyone know that I’m fine. But after thinking about Saturday’s fight, I know it’s time for me to hang it up. I’ve reached the point where I can still see the openings, but I just can’t get my shots there in time. In this business, a tenth of a second delay is too much. (more…)

Q&A: Fres Oquendo

Photo: Sam Cohen

By Phil Doherty

What does it take to become a champion boxer? Skill, certainly. Perseverance and hard work in the gym, without question. Solid matchmaking and sound management, undoubtedly. Yet so many fighters possess these attributes and never achieve the elite level of the sport. Could it be the difference lies in a little luck? Not much, but perhaps just a smidgen. You could argue we make our luck through hard work but this may oversimplify the point.

Take the case of heavyweight contender “Fast” Fres Oquendo (32-6, 21 KOs). Fres challenged for world titles in 2003 and 2004 against Chris Byrd and John Ruiz respectively. The Byrd decision continues to be cited as a shameful robbery and the Ruiz loss saw Oquendo ahead on all 3 judges’ scorecards until Ruiz stopped him in the 11th round. (more…)
