WBA middleweight world champion Felix Sturm invited the media, friends, family and celebrities to celebrate the grand opening of his brand new training facility in Cologne, Germany on Tuesday. Among the guests were Germany’s soccer superstar Lukas Podolski, a close friend of the 31-years old Sturm, and many TV, music and sports personalities. Sturm and his team are eyeing a ring return on either September 4 or September 11 in Cologne, likely in the 20,000 seat Lanxess Arena. An opponent will be set at a later date. First, the legal battle between Sturm and his former promoter Universum will continue on May 27 in front of the Hamburg district court. Team Sturm expects a positive verdict in July. The Puerto Rico Amateur Boxing Federation honored the life and dedication of Miguel A. Cotto Sr. in the inaugural acts for the famous “Cheo Aponte’s International Tournament” today in Caguas, Puerto Rico. “It is an honor for me, my mother Juana, my brothers Miguel and Juan Miguel, to receive this recognition made to my father. He worked really hard in this sport and for amateur boxing in Puerto Rico. His dedication, discipline, and determination will guide us for life,” said Jose Miguel Cotto.

In a battle of undefeated fighters Jo Jo Dan (26-0, 14 KOs) will be meeting Selcuk Aydin (19-0, 15 KOs) in Turkey June 5th for the WBC Silver (Interim) welterweight belt. “It’s a done deal,” Dan’s Romanian promoter Chris Ganescu of Gankor Promotions told Fightnews. Dan had been rated #1 at 140 pounds while Aydin occupies the number two position at welterweight behind Floyd Mayweather. Andre Berto holds the WBC belt at 147 pounds and would be obligated to face the winner of the bout. (more…)
Neven Pajkic and Greg Kielsa do it again as the two heavyweights headline the next chapter of Rumble at Rama set for Wednesday June 30th. Orion Sports Management confirmed Monday that Pajkic (12-0 5KO) who won virtually every round in the first contest and handed Kielsa (11-1 5KO) his defeat will waste no time in getting it on a second time. Undefeated World Boxing Association lightweight champion Paulus Moses (25-0, 17 KOs) will defend his title in the capital city of his native Namibia on May 29 in a showdown against WBA interim lightweight champion Miguel Acosta (26-3-2, 20 KOs). Don King Productions won the right to promote the match in a WBA purse bid of $150,000 and will present the event in association with Namibia-based Nestor Sunshine Promotions. HBO Sports confirmed today that 1.4 million pay-per-view buys were generated from the May 1st welterweight fight between Floyd Mayweather and Sugar Shane Mosley at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The fight was promoted by Mayweather Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions. The 1.4 million buy total generated $78.3 million in pay-per-view revenue. The pay-per-view buy total includes 740,000 from cable homes and 660,000 from satellite and telco homes.

In September, millions of boxing fans could see a heavyweight collision between boxing superstars WBO/IBF/IBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (54-3, 48 KOs) against WBA heavyweight champion David Haye (24-1, 22 KOs). Fightnews.com has been informed by K2 Promotions that negotiations could be wrapped up by Sunday. The IBF has agreed to allow Klitschko-Haye with the winner to face official challenger Alexander Povetkin (19-0, 14 KOs). Team Povetkin will hold a press conference tomorrow in Moscow.

Yesterday afternoon Giacobbe Fragomeni arrived in Poland where he will face Krzysztof Wlodarczyk on Saturday for the vacant WBC cruiserweight crown. Today the Italian held open workout for the media and looked as sharp as ever.
The Sarangani provincial board of canvassers is poised to declare Manny Pacquiao the winner of the heated election for the sole congressional seat in the region. With 85% of the votes counted, Pacquiao unofficially has 79,346 votes compared to political rival Roy Chiongbian’s 39,412. Pacquiao has already been projected as a landslide winner in local media, although the results aren’t yet official. The Chiongbian family has been a political dynasty that has ruled the province for decades.
Unbeaten Universum heavyweight Denis Boytsov (27-0, 22 KOs), rated #4 by all four sanctioning organizations, will be out of action until September after undergoing an operation on his right hand. Due to continuous pain in the right metacarpal, the 24-year-old power-puncher had a piece of bone from his hip moved to stabilize the hand at the Elim Hospital in Hamburg.
“For several years I’ve felt a lot of pain after my fights,” said Boytsov. “The operation was successful and I already notice a large effect. Everything feels much more stable. In the coming months, my punching power will prove to be higher.” (more…)

German heavyweight prospect Sebastian Köber (19-1, 13 KOs) will return to the ring on March 22 at the Rostock Stadthalle in Rostock, Germany for the first time since his shocking loss to Zack Page in January. Köber, who still holds the German interim heavyweight title, will defend against Markus Tomala (6-2, 3 KOs) in a rematch of last October’s clash won by Köber via split decision. Köber-Tomala is added to a particularly loaded “Universum Champions Night” card headlined by the big WBA heavyweight eliminator between ex-world champion Ruslan Chagaev and longtime contender Kali Meehan. Also featured are the WBC super featherweight title defense of world champion Vitali Tajbert against Hector Velazquez, the comeback of former WBO heavyweight champion Siarhei Liakhovich against Evans Quinn, a clash between world rated light heavyweights Aleksy Kuziemski and Igor Mikhalkin, the fourth pro fight of amateur world champion Jack Culcay, plus all action flyweight Pal Bedak.
WBC USNBC welterweight champion Favio Medina (22-2-3, 8 KOs) of Sandpoint, Idaho will take on Floridian Damian Frias (16-3, 7 KOs) in a ten rounder on June 3rd. The bout will take place at the Coeur d’Alene Casino in Worley, Idaho.
Canadian middleweight prospect Renan St Juste (21-1-1, 14 KOs) will take on Florida’s Marcus Upshaw (12-4-1, 6 KOs) on March 28th in a scheduled ten-rounder at the Pepsi Colisee in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. The bout will open ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights telecast headlined by comebacking former world champion Éric Lucas (39-7-3, 15 KOs) of Canada against former 3-time world title challenger Librado Andrade (28-3, 21 KOs) in a ten round super middleweight clash.
Management of the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California, has decided to pull the plug on the eight year run of the popular “Fight Night at the Tank” series. The venue is still open to bringing high profile boxing events to the arena but regularly scheduled shows are on hold.

Morel and Arce collide on “Latin Fury 15”, to be televised on Top Rank Pay-Per-View on June 26 from the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.
According to court and arrest records, the May 6 arrest of Archie Ray Marquez (10-0, 7 KOs), for domestic violence May 6, was not the first for the undefeated Albuquerque prospect. On Feb. 1, Marquez was arrested for domestic battery at Sandia Casino, when a video caught him choking his wife, Jamie Marquez, in an elevator. The violence has been going on for years, according to Jamie, who was granted a restraining order against her husband. Jamie has temporary custody of her and Archie’s two children; she is also planning to file for divorce. “The fans need to know the truth,” she says, pointing to the case of Edwin Valero, who killed himself after he was arrested for the murder of his wife.
As first reported on Fightnews, Marquez was arrested on May 6 for domestic battery, but was released on bail. The Gary Shaw-promoted fighter was scheduled to fight May 14 on ShoBox but pulled out, citing an injury. Another ShoBox card is in the works co-headlining Marquez for June 25 in Albuquerque.
The city of Los Mochis is buzzing about the big championship card “Puro Sinaloa: Quien es el más Macho”, where three-time world champion Humberto “Zorrita“ Soto will defend his WBC lightweight championship against Ricardo “Pelón“ Domínguez this Saturday, May 15 at the Estadio Centenario. Soto (51-7-2, 32 KOs) of Los Mochis, Sinaloa and Domínguez (31-5-2, 19 KOs) of nearby Culiacan, will battle in the main event of “Top Rank Live” a show promoted by Top Rank and Promociones Zanfer, that will be telecast by Fox Sports Net and Fox Sport Espanol in the United States. Promoter Don King will host a press conference on Wednesday in St. Louis to announce the return of hometown star Cory Spinks to defend his IBF junior middleweight championship against #1-ranked mandatory challenger Cornelius Bundrage on June 12 at the Chaifetz Arena. King will also announce undefeated St. Louis cruiserweight contender Ryan Coyne will appear on the card. St. Louis-based Rumble Time Promotions will be providing additional local fighters to appear on the card.
Although desperately in need of a better phone, WBA super lightweight world title challenger Paulie Malignaggi was not at a loss for words during teleconference in advance of Saturday’s showdown with reigning world champion Amir Khan in New York City.
Former Notre Dame boxing captain Mike Lee will make his professional debut against St. Louis native Keith Debow on May 29th at the UIC Pavilion as part of the first TOP RANK LIVE event in Chicago. The main event will feature an outstanding ten round welterweight showdown between Mexican veterans Jesus “Renuente” Soto-Karass and Gabriel “EL Rey” Martinez. Leading Australian promoter Bill Treacy and future Hall of Famer Ricky Hatton will co-promote world middleweight contenders Daniel Geale (22-1, 13 KOs) and England’s Mathew Macklin (26-2, 18 KOs) in Sydney, NSW, Australia during August in what promises to outstanding matchup between two of the best 160 pounders in the world today. Hatton was in a Sydney, Australia in December last year and had talks with Treacy regarding promotions featuring Australian and English boxers. “Ricky Hatton has been a pleasure to work with.” said Treacy.” We are happy that Daniel Geale will clash with Mathew Macklin. Both Geale and Macklin have shown they deserve to there world ratings and both have there sights set on a shot at the IBF middleweight championship currently held by Sebastian Sylvester (33-3, 16 KOs).” (more…)
Super middleweight Scott “Cujo” Sigmon pounded out a hard fought ten round unanimous decision victory over experienced veteran Carlton “Head Banga” Holland on Saturday in front of a packed house at Jefferson Forest High School in Forest, VA. “He was a wily veteran” said Sigmon. “I was talking to him during the fight and told him that I knew he wanted to quit but he kept coming.” Official scores were 99-91, 98-92, 98-92.
