Zuniga ready to fight!

By Dave Spencer — Fightnews Canada

Tuesday marked the second time Fulgencio Zuniga had been to Montreal. The first was last September when he brought to the city to help prepare IBF champion Lucian Bute keep his world super-middleweight title with some scheduled sparring. This time out, the Colombian slugger has exactly the opposite in mind. “I’m coming with a great hunger to win this fight. I’m coming to Quebec to win the belt and to bring it back to Columbia.” But while both boxers renewed acquaintances before this Friday’s fight at the Bell Centre, both were very quiet and reserved and the thunder was stolen by Alfredo Marchio, promoter to the challenger who threatened to pull out if Montreal referee is the third man in the ring when the bell rings. Started as a political event, the holiday blended in the culture of many countries, but primarily the states of former Soviet bloc, i.e. Eastern Europe. In Russia, the day lost its political flavor, and became simply an occasion for men to express their love to the women around them in a way somewhat similar to Mother’s Day and St. Valentine’s Day mixed together.

Tatsuyoshi KO’d in Thailand!

Faded ex-champ loses to journeyman

By Joe Koizumi

Despite our commission’s continual dissuasion and despite our boxing world’s strong opposition, ex-WBC bantam champ Joichiro Tatsuyoshi (20-7-1, 14 KOs), 118, went abroad again to continue fighting and miserably suffered a bad TKO defeat by a mediocre Thai opponent named Sakai Jockygym, 118.75, at 1:03 of the seventh round on Sunday in Bangkok, Thailand. Tatsuyoshi’s bad loss apparently tarnished his previous reputation as one of the most popular attractions ever produced in Japan. The three-time WBC champ, at his prime, surpassed even ticket-selling records of Fighting Harada and Yoko Gushiken. But Tatsuyoshi, already 38, is never what he used to be. The Japan Boxing Commission (JBC) declared his license forfeited because he cannot win over even a six-round boxer here in Japan. Tatsuyoshi previously suffered detached retina and have it operated by well-reputed ophthalmologists three or more times. He may lose his eyesight, if fighting on. (more…)

Team Sauerland dismisses Universum claims

It was with great surprise that Team Sauerland heard about Universum’s press release regarding the fight between WBA heavyweight champion Nikolai Valuev and “champion in recess” Ruslan Chagaev. “Klaus-Peter Kohl´s remarks are untrue,” Sauerland Event General Manager Chris Meyer said. “While requesting so many special permits from the WBA, he must have lost his sense for reality. Universum are responsible for the heavyweight chaos. The WBA’s order was clear: Once Chagaev is fit again, he has to fight Valuev. However, Universum decided to take on Drumond instead. The fight was a farce. Drumond could have never become the official world champion because Valuev is the official champion!” (more…)

Chagaev Camp Responds!

Official Klaus-Peter Kohl Statement

Universum-Promoter Klaus-Peter Kohl is happy that WBA heavyweight champion Nikolai Valuev wants a rematch against WBA champion (in recess) Ruslan Chagaev. Sauerland-Boxer Valuev, who won the title after Chagaev was idled by an ankle injury, said in an official statement yseterday, “Enough is enough. All this confusion has to end.”
When will Chagaev-Valuev II take place?
Klaus-Peter Kohl: “That is up to the WBA. Last fall at the WBA Convention, we heard that the fight must take place by Summer 2009. Because Wilfried Sauerland and Valuev then requested and got approved a voluntary title defense against Evander Holyfield, the whole mess emerged that there were two WBA world champions at the same time. And this was despite the fact that we presented medical documents that Ruslan was fit at the start of the year and can fight again after his serious Achilles’ tendon injury.“
What is the new September deadline now?
Klaus-Peter Kohl: “Nikolai Valuev should have been named as only an interim champion. For us, he is no more than that. He clearly lost to Ruslan and will do so again. The Sauerland Team wanted in some incomprehensible way yet a second voluntary defense and the WBA gave us September 2009 as the deadline for the rematch. Now I am glad that Nikolai Valuev and his team have come to their senses. Their actions have only caused confusion. The boxing fans don’t understand it anymore. But it will soon be clear that Ruslan is the only true WBA heavyweight champion.”
