Caught at the crossroads

Jorge Linares takes on Rocky Juarez

Story and photos by Chris Cozzone

A failed five-time world title challenger coming off two straight losses matched up against a former two-time champ proclaimed to be worth his weight in gold – that is, until he was KO’d in one last year – might not top the list of the year’s most important matches.

But it just might make a damn good fight.

That is, if one guy can break a slump and a tendency to throw away the first half of a fight; and the other pug, put behind him, a devastating kayo loss and a bad showing in his comeback . . . Click here for more

Heavyweight Steve Collins (23-1, 16 KOs) dropped Anthony Greely (7-34-3, 1 KO) three times en route to a fourth round KO at the latest Savarese Boxing Promotions card at the Houston Club. Collins decked Greely with a left hook in the opening round and again with a chopping overhand right in the third. A hybrid left hook/uppercut sent Greely to the canvas in the fourth round for the full count. Junior welterweight Tiffany Junot (9-2-1, 6 KOs) scored a picturesque one-punch knockout over Patricia Linton (0-8) with a straight right to the jaw that sent Linton crashing to the canvas in slow motion in the opening round. Linares, Juarez in crossroads war

By Chris Cozzone

In what can only be described as a crossroads fight, former two-time champ Jorge “El Nino de Oro” Linares (28-1, 18 KOs) and four-time title challenger Rocky Juarez (28-6-1, 20 KOs) are prepared for a war on the July 31 HBO PPV-televised card headlining Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Juan Diaz II. Both spoke out today during a national teleconference:

“This isn’t my first crossroads fight,” said Juarez. “This is a must-win for me. I need to prove to myself and to the boxing public that Rocky Juarez is not done. I am still in the game. I’m a young, old veteran who is still hungry and still trying to achieve my lifelong goal of becoming a world champion. Jorge Linares is a good opponent to get me back to a title shot.”

“To call it a ‘crossroads fight’ is well put,” said Linares, who considers Juarez his toughest opponent to date. “Juarez is a tremendous gladiator at the top level . .. but so am I. My speed, skill and technical attributes will be the same, if not better, than I’ve shown in the past. Because of this, the bout will be a great fight and whoever wins can go on to a world title.”

Stay tuned for a full report in the morning.
