IBF Middleweight Champion Sebastian Sylvester is brimming with confidence ahead of his mandatory defence against Roman Karmazin. The 29-year-old German (30-3, 16 KOs) is under pressure to keep the belt for a very special reason. “I will get married this summer and I want to get married as world champion,” he said. “Karmazin will not spoil my wedding. He is a strong guy with a good left but we have carefully analysed him. I know I got what it takes to beat him. On August 21 at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ, Tomasz Adamek (41-1, 27 KO) will meet Michael Grant (46-3, 34 KO) in a fight that has more subplots than a James Bond movie. First, in 1999 Michael Grant beat another Polish heavyweight hopeful Andrew Golota. Secondly, Grant will have Eddie Mustafa Muhammad in his corner, the same trainer who guided light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson to dealing Adamek his only professional defeat. World middleweight contender Daniel Geale (23-1, 13 KOs) moved closer to a world title shot when he stopped former world super middleweight contender Kariz Kariuki (21-9-2,18 KOs) in eleven rounds on Wednesday to capture IBF Pan Pacific title at the Wollongong Entertainment Center, Wollongong, NSW, Australia. IBF #7,WBC #13 Geale, 5’10, controlled the action in most of the rounds as he boxed skillfully connecting with accurate combinations to the head and body of his 6’2 opponent. Kariuki, formerly of Kenya but now based in Australia, was hurt in rounds six and seven from solid combinations to the head. At 1:24 of round eleven referee Charlie Lucas crowned Geale the winner when Kariuki was in no condition to defend himself. For more details and photos click here…

Officially, former light heavyweight champion Montell Griffin had to settle for a surprising draw in the quest for his 50th professional victory last Saturday against veteran Ross “The Boss” Thompson at the Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Indiana. However, Hitz Boxing Founder Bobby Hitz says there is more than meets the eye to this surprising outcome. “First of all, I commend Montell for even getting in the ring that night. Ross Thompson assured us he was in shape and ready to go all the way along until he showed up at the weigh-in so far over the contracted weight of 178 that he was at the heavyweight limit. We told him he would have to go lose some weight and then found him at the buffet with a big plate of food an hour later.” (more…)

Members of the International Boxing Federation/United States Boxing Association arrived at the Wyndham Rio Mar Resort in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico on Tuesday, June 1, 2010 for the organization’s 27th Annual Convention. The following evening’s cocktail, a highly anticipated event each year, was an excellent start for this convention. In attendance were IBF Super-middleweight Champion Lucien Bute, IBF Light-Heavyweight Champion Tavoris Cloud and IBF Inter-Continental Middleweight Champion Benjamin Simon. President Daryl J. Peoples thanked the crowd of over two hundred people for attending this year’s convention and for their continued support adding that the organization looks forward to yet another successful convention. It appears there is finally an agreement for Fernando Montiel to defend his WBC and WBO bantamweight world titles against former WBA super flyweight champion Rafael Conception on July 17 in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas, Mexico. In the co-feature, super featherweight prospect Joksan Hernández is lined up to face Rogers Mtagwa. Also seeing action is Salvador Sanchez Jr. Montiel is already training for the bout in Los Mochis, Sinaloa. Sources report that an agreement was reached after the Concepcion had initially rejected the first offer.

Word is that Mexican ring legend Érik Morales has suffered an injury to his right hand which will KO his scheduled fight against Vicente Escobedo on July 17 in Tijuana. Morales initially suffered the injury in his comeback fight against Jose Alfaro and reinjured it while training in Temoaya, Mexico.

Today there was a press conference in Mexico City to announce the next fight of Saúl “Canelo” Alvarez, which will be against Luis “Principito” Cuello of Argentina. The Jalisco State Government will participate in the next bout of Alvarez to be held in Guadalajara on July 10, which will also feature some WBC world championships. (more…)
It may not be the Big Apple, but the bright lights will be shining on Worcester, Massachusetts June 24 when DiBella Entertainment’s Broadway Boxing returns to Mechanics Hall. In the main event, Worcester’s own undefeated prodigy Edwin “La Bomba” Rodriguez(15-0, 11 KOs) coming off two nationally televised knockout wins, steps in with rugged veteran Gabriel Holguin (25-8, 9 KOs) in a super middleweight contest. In the co-feature, local favorite and undefeated junior welterweight prospect Danny O’Connor (12-0, 3 KOs) takes on Shamir Reyes (18-6-2, 7 KOs). Junior lightweight Ryan Kielczewski (7-0, 2 KOs), heavyweight Rashad Minor (3-1, 3 KOs) and light heavyweight Isiah Thomas (6-0, 4 KOs) will also see action.
Boxing promoter Don King was ecstatic after learning on Saturday of Miguel Acosta’s win over previously undefeated World Boxing Association lightweight champion Paulus Moses (25-1, 17 KOs) in Moses’ home country of Namibia. Acosta (27-9-2, 21 KOs), from Caracas, Venezuela, came in as the underdog WBA interim champion and scored a sixth-round knockout to leave as the outright WBA lightweight champion. King also noted press reports after the fight indicating Acosta’s father had said he believed his son was now a promotional free agent. “I don’t know who might be telling Oscar that his son’s contract with me has expired, but that is not the case. In fact, my contract with Miguel extends well into 2012.” (more…)

Welterweights Antwone Smith, of Miami, FL, and Lanardo Tyner, of Houston, TX, will meet in a scheduled 10-round fight as on Friday evening, July 9, in the ballroom at Atlantic City Boardwalk Hall. Along with the main event featuring Mike Jones vs. Irving Garcia, this card will give boxing fans a chance to witness the progress of the two best United States-based welterweight prospects, Jones and Smith. Team Sauerland head coach Ulli Wegner today received the German Federal Cross of Merit. The 68-year-old, who has been voted German coach of the year seven straight times, was honored for his career accomplishments. He has led the likes of Marco Huck, Sven Ottke, Markus Beyer and Cecilia Braekhus to world titles and also guided ex-champion Arthur Abraham to international stardom. “This is a great honour,” Wegner said. “It really means a lot to me. Without my team and of course my athletes, this would have never been possible. I am deeply touched.”
Wegner is not the only member of Team Sauerland that has been awarded a prize this week. The European Boxing Union (EBU) honoured the Berlin-based boxing stable with the “2009 Promoter of the Year Award”, which will be officially presented at the EBU´s next General Assembly in Madrid on June 12. On the same weekend, Wilfried Sauerland will officially be inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, New York during the annual Hall of Fame celebrations. IBO Cruiserweight champion Danny Green (29-3, 26 KO’s) will defend his title against fellow Australian Paul Briggs (26-3, 18 KO’s) on July 21st at the Entertainment Centre in Sydney, New South Wales. The 37 year old Green will be making the third defence of the title he won in the US from Argentinean Julio Cesar Dominguez in August 2009 with a fifth round stoppage. (more…)
Matchroom Sport has announced six participants in the line-up for their next event “Prizefighter Super-Middleweights” at York Hall, Bethnal Green on Wednesday June 30. The latest installment of Barry Hearn’s eight-man, one night tournament includes Tony Dodson, Tony Quigley, Stevie McGuire, Daniel Cadman, Peter Federenko, and Eddie McIntosh gunning for the £32,000 prize live on Sky Sports. For the first time in the tournament’s history, the eighth competitor will be chosen by fight fans through the official Prizefighter website. Three days ahead of his IBF Cruiserweight Title fight against Troy Ross, Steve “USS” Cunningham today arrived in the East German city of Neubrandenburg. The first face-to-face meeting with his opponent is scheduled for tomorrow at the official press conference. “I am in great shape and ready to win back my former title,” Cunningham said. In the main fight of the night, IBF Middleweight Champion Sebastian Sylvester will defend his title against mandatory challenger Roman Karmazin.
The International Boxing Federation junior middleweight championship scheduled for June 12 at Chaifetz Arena in St. Louis has been postponed. Don King Productions was promoting the event that planned to feature St. Louisan Cory Spinks (37-5, 11 KOs) defending his IBF 154-pound title against mandatory challenger Cornelius Bundrage (29-4, 17 KOs), from Detroit. A number of conflicting interests factored into the decision to move the bout to a future card. Don King Productions’ longtime radio partner in St. Louis, Hot 104.1 FM, concurrently announced their popular “Super Jam 3” concert would take place on the same day in the St. Louis suburb of Maryland Heights, and DKP will be announcing shortly that they will be presenting another world championship boxing event in St. Louis later this summer. Promoter Don King said he preferred to not compete with a radio station that already has a commitment to be somewhere else on June 12. In addition, with news leaking out about an August boxing event in St. Louis he will be announcing soon, King felt he may be competing with himself for limited entertainment dollars during the summer season.
