IBF Middleweight Champion Sebastian Sylvester is brimming with confidence ahead of his mandatory defence against Roman Karmazin. The 29-year-old German (30-3, 16 KOs) is under pressure to keep the belt for a very special reason. “I will get married this summer and I want to get married as world champion,” he said. “Karmazin will not spoil my wedding. He is a strong guy with a good left but we have carefully analysed him. I know I got what it takes to beat him. With the help of my fans in Neubrandenburg, I will defend my title for a second time and then get married as a world champion.” (more…)

Q&A: Eddie Mustafa Muhammad

Adamek-Grant: “History will repeat itself”

Mary Ann Owen

By Przemek Garczarczyk

On August 21 at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ, Tomasz Adamek (41-1, 27 KO) will meet Michael Grant (46-3, 34 KO) in a fight that has more subplots than a James Bond movie. First, in 1999 Michael Grant beat another Polish heavyweight hopeful Andrew Golota. Secondly, Grant will have Eddie Mustafa Muhammad in his corner, the same trainer who guided light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson to dealing Adamek his only professional defeat. Eddie has no doubt that history will repeat itself. (more…)

Hitz blasts Ross the Boss

Officially, former light heavyweight champion Montell Griffin had to settle for a surprising draw in the quest for his 50th professional victory last Saturday against veteran Ross “The Boss” Thompson at the Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Indiana. However, Hitz Boxing Founder Bobby Hitz says there is more than meets the eye to this surprising outcome. “First of all, I commend Montell for even getting in the ring that night. Ross Thompson assured us he was in shape and ready to go all the way along until he showed up at the weigh-in so far over the contracted weight of 178 that he was at the heavyweight limit. We told him he would have to go lose some weight and then found him at the buffet with a big plate of food an hour later.” (more…)

Spinks vs. Bundrage Postponed

The International Boxing Federation junior middleweight championship scheduled for June 12 at Chaifetz Arena in St. Louis has been postponed. Don King Productions was promoting the event that planned to feature St. Louisan Cory Spinks (37-5, 11 KOs) defending his IBF 154-pound title against mandatory challenger Cornelius Bundrage (29-4, 17 KOs), from Detroit. A number of conflicting interests factored into the decision to move the bout to a future card. Don King Productions’ longtime radio partner in St. Louis, Hot 104.1 FM, concurrently announced their popular “Super Jam 3” concert would take place on the same day in the St. Louis suburb of Maryland Heights, and DKP will be announcing shortly that they will be presenting another world championship boxing event in St. Louis later this summer. Promoter Don King said he preferred to not compete with a radio station that already has a commitment to be somewhere else on June 12. In addition, with news leaking out about an August boxing event in St. Louis he will be announcing soon, King felt he may be competing with himself for limited entertainment dollars during the summer season.
