It costs Renan St-Juste (20-1-1 13KO) a lot every time he takes on a fight, but the powerful middleweight hopes the dividends are huge Saturday as he returns to the ring in the first time in over a year against the upset minded Dionisio Miranda (20-5-2 18KO) at the Bell Centre in Montreal. The hammer fisted southpaw who owns his own gym just east of Montreal is forced to find extra help to run things in the gym when he is training for a fight, but as the soon to be 38-year-old closes in a title shot or a big money fight, he knows the clock is ticking. “I don’t know exactly where a win will put me,” said the WBA #8 contender, “But no more stupid fights. If they have no plans for me I’ll walk and retire. I want them to give me something. Everyone has had a chance, I just want them to give me mine.” (More)

Promoter Ulf Steinforth sees WBO world champion Robert Stieglitz (37-2, 23 KOs) as a clear favorite in Saturday’s world title defense against unbeaten Universum boxer Eduard Gutknecht (18-0, 7 KOs). “Robert has been with me for nearly ten years and his development parallels that of our SES boxing stable. Since our inception 10 years ago, we have worked continuously to advance. Four world champions speak for themselves. Robert Stieglitz came to me as a ‘young bird’ with good abilities and with hard work, willingness to learn and great fights he’s won the world championship. Now he’s my stable’s falcon – strong, fast, patiently waiting and he punches at just the right moment. A falcon in the ring, and once he catches his prey he doesn’t let go. He’ll prove this against Gutknecht and retain his championship belt in his second title defense!” The bout takes place Saturday at the famous Bordelandhalle Hall in Magdeburg, where hometown favorite Stieglitz has fought many times before. It will be the seventh time two Germans have fought each other for a world title.

Kalle Sauerland has confirmed that the Super Six World Boxing Classic Clash between WBC Super-Middleweight Champion Carl Froch and Danish hero Mikkel Kessler (April 24) will go ahead as planned despite multiple airspace closures throughout Europe. The “Cobra” was scheduled to fly from Great Britain to Denmark tomorrow, but with most of the European airports shut down until further notice, he might be forced to make different arrangements. “We will make sure the Cobra gets to Herning in good time to fight Mikkel,” Kesslers promoter Kalle Sauerland said. “The Volcano cannot serve as an excuse for Froch not to show up. Nothing can prevent the biggest boxing fight in Danish history from happening. We are already looking into different ways of transportation. Should need be, we will fly Froch in by helicopter for Mikkel to knock him out. He can then take the boat back home – once Mikkel is done with him, I doubt he will be allowed on a normal plane anyway.” (more…)

On Saturday night Yahya McClain will hope to be one step closer to what he feels is his destiny; a cruiserweight championship at the age of 42. Unlike older fighters that stick around well beyond their best days, McClain’s comeback is different from the run of the mill “old” fighter trying to relive his glory days. After losing a unanimous decision at the hands of Ramon Garbey in ’99 and interested in other things outside of boxing, McClain prematurely decided to hang it up with a decent record of 23-7-2, 17 KOs and walked away from competing. “I got caught with a left hook in the first round of that fight and I just decided to survive and walk away unscathed. At the time I was looking into acting and had an audition lined up. Realizing that a tough fight with Garbey could possibly ruin my opportunity to be in a film I simply decided that night that it was time to stop fighting and pursue other things that I wanted to accomplish in life,” said McClain. After just 18 professional fights, unbeaten WBO #2 super middleweight Eddy Gutknecht (18-0, 7 KOs) finds himself in his first world title fight on Saturday night against WBO champion Robert Stieglitz (37-2, 23 KOs) at Bordelandhalle in Magdeburg, Germany. The 28-year-old Gutknecht earned his title shot by upsetting former champion Karoly Balzsay, the same man whom Stieglitz dethroned for the world title. When asked about facing Stieglitz, Gutknecht said “He has many strengths. He’s always moving forward like a machine firing a lot of shots. You get the impression that he gets stronger as the rounds go on. We’ve already seen in his fights that he’s a hard puncher. But that doesn’t make me nervous. I can deal with that and punch myself. I’ve been well prepared by my trainer Magomed Schaburov. I couldn’t have done more. I want to take the belt home with me. I know I have what it takes.”
