DKP/Mayorga Update

After hearing eight hours of testimony over two days in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Broward County Circuit Court Judge Marc H. Gold today granted Don King Productions’ request for an injunction preventing Ricardo Mayorga from appearing tonight on an MMA card tonight in Fayetteville, NC. Mayorga is in Fayetteville and the MMA promoter has issued a press release stating the bout will go on as scheduled despite “Don King and a bunch of legal mumbo jumbo.” However, Gold warned from the bench, “If my orders are disobeyed, there will be serious sanctions from this court.” The judge is requiring DKP to post a $1,000,000 bond today for the order to stick.

Ngoudjo has broken jaw/orbital bone

By Dave Spencer / Fightnews Canada

Former two-time world title challenger Hermann Ngoudjo suffered more than just a defeat at the hands of Julio Diaz in Primm Nevada Friday night; the super-lightweight contender suffered both a broken jaw and broken orbital bone that required medical attention following the fight. “He didn’t complain at all during the fight and we’re not quite sure when it happened,” said trainer Marc Ramsay who saw his fighter go down to Diaz by scores of 97-93, 97-93, 99-91 on the scorecards. “It was only a half-hour after the fight that he started mentioning the pain and we had him checked out. The jaw is not that bad but the orbital is the more serious of the two.” It is possible that the fateful blow was delivered in the 9th, a left hand that sent Ngoudjo back into the ropes and had him hanging on for the only time in the fight. WBO junior middleweight champ Sergiy Dzinziruk made the fifth defense of his title look easy with a dominating 10th round TKO of previously once-beaten challenger Daniel Dawson in the main event of ShoBox: The New Generation Friday night on SHOWTIME from the Chumash Resort Casino in Santa Ynez, Calif. “My plan was to use the jab to make him tired and then go to the other punches,” Dzinziruk said. “We saw some tapes of him and knew the early rounds would be tough. Our plan was to apply more pressure in the later rounds and finish him. We’d had a long layoff and we wanted to take it easy in the beginning.” For more details and photos click here…

Dzinziruk easily beats Dawson

Tom Casino/SHOWTIME

By Francisco Salazar at ringside

In a very one-sided bout, unbeaten WBO junior middleweight champion Sergiy Dzinziruk (36-0, 24 KOs) scored a tenth round TKO over late sub Daniel Dawson (34-2, 24 KOs) on Friday night at the Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, California. Making his US debut, southpaw Dzinziruk demonstrated a stiff jab that dictated the pace. He didn’t look like a fighter who had been out of action for 18 months, as he never let Dawson into the fight. The mismatch was waved off by referee Jose Cobian to save Dawson from further punishment at 2:12 of the tenth.

Unbeaten welterweight prospect Vernon Paris (21-0, 14 KOs) had all he could handle in winning an eight round split decision over rugged late sub Juan Santiago (12-4-1, 7 KOs). Rivalries

By Steve Farhood

Jake LaMotta famously said of Sugar Ray Robinson, “I fought him so often, I almost got diabetes.”

Over the years, LaMotta has used that line again and again, and that’s okay because he fought Sugar Ray again and again—six times in all from 1942 through “The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre” in 1951.

On May 22, Israel Vazquez and Rafael Marquez will clash for a fourth time in a rivalry that ranks with the best in boxing history. From March 2007 through March 2008, Vazquez and Marquez battled three times for the WBC super bantamweight title. Marquez won the first by stoppage; Vazquez won the rematch by stoppage; and with the rubber match in the balance going into the final round, Vazquez mounted an inspired 12th-round rally to win by split decision (one point on the deciding card).

The second and third bouts were selected as Fight of the Year. (more…)

Dzinziruk set for US debut

By Graham Houston

Showtime’s ShoBox series usually focuses on young, up-and-coming fighters, but this Friday’s main event features a seasoned champion in Sergiy Dzinziruk, a German-based Ukrainian who makes his U.S. debut. Dzinziruk, an unbeaten southpaw, will be defending his WBO junior middleweight belt against Daniel Dawson, an Australian fighter who has lost just once in 35 bouts. Essentially this is a showcase for Dzinziruk, who is jointly promoted by Gary Shaw and Art Pelullo.
