Zab Judah Update

Main Events and Super Judah promotions have announced they have entered into an agreement to co-promote former two-division world champion Zab “Super” Judah (38-6, 26 KO’s), who will return to the ring in mid-July, when he makes his first ever appearance at Newark’s Prudential Center. He has decided to go back down in weight and begin campaigning as a junior welterweight. The opponent, date and on sale info for Zab’s upcoming fight will be announced shortly.

Former world title challenger Danny “The Bronx Bomber” Santiago (31-4-1, 19 KOs) defeated “The Billy Goat” William Bailey (10-7-0, 4 KOs) in a horse race of a match. Headlining One Punch Productions’ latest installment of their popular “Ballroom Brawl” series at the Tampa Westshore DoubleTree Hotel, Santiago showed both his age and ring experience in defeating the outmatched and unorthodox Bailey. After an exhilarating first round, the former title challenger kept the fight on the move, using the entire ring as his track to keep the forward fighting Bailey at a distance. (more…)

Arce cut in sparring

In just his first day of sparring sessions, triple world champion Jorge “Travieso” Arce (54-6-1, 41 KOs) was cut on his right eyebrow and according to the medical diagnosis it will be practically impossible for him to be ready to fight on June 26 in San Antonio, Texas against WBO bantamweight champion Eric Morel. During an exchange of blows with sparring partner Luis Jorge Lugo, Arce took a left hook and immediately started to bleed just below his right eyebrow and quickly stopped the action. Arce was preparing in the Montiel Gym in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico in preparation to challenge for a world title in a fourth weight division.

The 30-year-old Arce was checked by trainer Manuel Montiel, who temporarily stopped the bleeding. Arce went to see Dr. Ariel Baldenegro who diagnosed a cut three inches deep, which required stitches. He recommended rest for two to three weeks to fully heal the injury. (more…)

Demyaneko hammers Gomez

Welterweight Vitaliy Demyaneko (19-0, 12 KOs) notched up the eighth defense of his PABA title in Moscow Sunday when he stopped late replacement Walter Gomez (22-9-1, 11 KOs) in the second round. The fight was also a defense of Vitaliy’s WBA Asia Pacific title. Demyaneko was originally slated to face WBO #15 Sam Columban who couldn’t make the fight due to visa delays getting into Russia. This fight will now take place either in the USA or Australia later in the year said Ring Stars spokesperson Anna Fedorova. “We have him now rated WBO #5, WBA #10 and WBC #9 and intend to fight at least two more times before the year is out. Our team matchmaker Stuart Duncan is confident he can put the Columban fight back on another date and if Zab Judah ever re-surfaces I know this is who Vitaliy and his trainer want badly.” (more…)

Bedak will challenge WBO junior featherweight champion Wilfredo Vázquez Jr. of Puerto Rico (18-0-1, 15 KOs) this Saturday, May 29th in a 12 round world title main event. Klitschko-Sosnowski heats up!

WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko is talking about his legacy, while challenger Albert Sosnowski is talking about an upset when they collide on Saturday.

“Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis had this belt. It’s not for nothing that I own it now!” said Klitschko at today’s press conference in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. “I want [the belt] to prove that I’m the best in the world.”

Sosnowski stated “I realize that all the experts consider me a longshot, but Klitschko will regret having given me this opportunity. He’s already passed his prime. Many of his fights have been against living punching bags who had already lost in the locker room. You only have an opportunity like this once in a lifetime and I want to use it. I’ll show Vitali and become be the first Polish heavyweight champion!”

New foe for Omar Chavez

Unbeaten welterweight Omar “Businessman” Chavez (21-0, 15 KOs) will have a litmus test in boxing when he faces the experienced Rodrigo Juarez (22-10-1, 11 KOs) in an eight-rounder on Saturday at the Sports Center Fair in Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico. Chavez, the son of Mexican ring legend Julio Cesar Chavez, was originally slated to face Jose Arelis Lopez (7-9-2, 5 KOs) in a rematch of their spirited March 20th fight, but Lopez wasn’t 100% ready and the more experienced Juarez was brought in. The card also features middleweight José Luis “Elotero” Zertuche (21-5-3, 16 KOs) against Panchito Sierra (20-3, 19 KOs).

Stars see boxing under the stars

When Bob Hope and Bing Crosby founded the historic Lakeside Golf Club in Burbank over 60 years ago they certainly didn’t envision Lakeside to be the site for pro boxing. But last Thursday before a crowd of 500, including celebrities Joe Pesci, Andy Garcia, Bob Uecker, Harold Green, Scott Baio and Sly Stallone, Roy Englebrecht Promotions presented a six bout card titled Rumble On The Range. With a ring set up on the Lakeside driving range, the fans, who feasted on a ringside buffet and open bars, witnessed four pro boxing bouts with a Lakeside Golf Club Championship Belt on the line in the featured bout. WBO welterweight champion and Philippines congressman Manny Pacquiao is suffering from “a mild stomach ulcer” that will keep him hospitalized in Manila for a few days.

The June 4 Telemundo card featuring welterweights Mercito Gesta against Oscar Meza is in search of a new home after the Miccosukee Resort in Miami pulled the plug citing an undisclosed conflict.

Heavyweight David Tua will now fight Monte Barrett on July 18 at the Tropicana Casino and Resort in Atlantic City. The fight was originally announced for June 26 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Tua’s last two fights have been in New Zealand, the most recent against Friday Ahunanya reportedly lost “quite a significant amount of dollars,” prompting the Tua camp to unsuccessfully seek an early exit from an agreement with Maori TV.

Still nothing happening in talks between the respective camps of David Haye and the Klitschkos. The Haye camp isn’t expected to make any decisions on his next move for at least a month.

“This is truly like a family affair.” No words could have described the atmosphere at the post fight press conference better than the words uttered by Gary Shaw as a stoic Israel Vazquez (44-5, 33KO) and a triumphant Rafael Marquez (39-5, 35KO) made their way to the dais with their respective teams. Despite the heavy artillery that both fighters have unleashed on each other for twenty-five rounds as part of quite possibly the greatest boxing trilogy in boxing history, only words of respect and praise were shared by the both camps. With his now-handicapped friend watching at ringside, Filipino bantanweight prospect Michael Domingo exacted a short but sweet revenge as he poleaxed Colombian Luis Melendez in the second round Sunday night at the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu, Philippines. Domingo, 30, stalked Melendez as soon as the bell opened the highly emotional bout with the Filipino throwing few but punishing hooks to the body. “That was what Z told me. In other action, super middleweight Brian Cohen (15-2, 14 KOs) blew away Jason Wilson (0-5) in two rounds, super middleweight Ryan Franklin (4-7, 3 KOs) halted Anthony Gott (0-4) in round one, super middleweight Sidney Gurley (3-1, 2 KOs) dispatched Francis McKechnie (3-16, 3 KOs) in round one, pro debuting Willie Price (1-0, 1 KO) took out Mike Krull (0-9) in round one, in a female fight Kimberly Thomas (1-0) stopped Tracy Shanks (0-1) in one, and in the only fight to go the distance, super middleweight Ed Gates (2-0, 1 KOs) outpointed Guy Packer (3-27-2) over four. The promoter of the card was RK Promotions and the card was sanctioned by the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians Boxing Commission.
