Zaveck faster than a horse

SES Boxing

Before his world title defense tonight Ljubljana, Slovenia, IBF welterweight champion Jan Zaveck had a different kind of sporting challenge on his hands. In the last phase of his preparations, the champion (who also enjoys horseback riding) was out for a run on the outskirts of Magdeburg, when he noticed a loose horse. “I saw an excited horse trotting freely with a halter and reins. I thought that clearly wasn’t right, especially with a busy street next to it. I didn’t hesitate and immediately sped up and tried to catch it. With a hard sprint, quite contrary to my training, I quickly turned, grabbed the halter and gave it back to the thankful owners, who were so happy they said I can ride it whenever I want. Berto, Quintana Presser Quotes

Andre Berto: “I had a tremendous training camp and it’s going to be a terrific night of boxing on Saturday night. Carlos Quintana is a former world champion and a crafty southpaw. This is my third straight southpaw so I’m pretty used to them by now and I had some great southpaw sparring in training camp. I’m excited to get back in ring and honestly, I wish the fight was tonight. I’ve never been this focused, hungry and motivated for a fight before and Carlos Quintana has a major task on his hands on Saturday night. I’m going to let everything loose for a good cause, and you are going to see the best of me on Saturday night. It’s going to be a terrific night of boxing and I hope everyone will come out and support this very important cause.”

Carlos Quintana: “Andre Berto is a great, young fighter with a lot of power, but I’m also a great fighter and I will prove it Saturday night. There can only be one winner on Saturday night and I will be the winner and the new WBC Welterweight Champion of the World. I trained very hard for this fight, for a world title fight and for Berto. I did everything necessary to take the belt from Berto. You might see Berto acting very calm and peaceful right now and this a great cause, but he’s a fighter I’m prepared to see something different on Saturday night, and it will definitely be a fight.”

Berto defends his WBC welterweight title against Quintana on Saturday night at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida. Kessler, who lost a technical decision to Andre Ward (21-0, 13 KOs) in the tournament’s first round and replaced trainer Ricard Olsen with former assistant trainer Jimmy Montoya, said a new approach was required. “I had to change a lot, of course,” Kessler said on a conference call. “I can’t reveal the details now, but I had to change a lot.” Froch, also on the call, said he wasn’t serious or disrespectful in commenting recently that he will decapitate Kessler—a quote Kessler has posted on the wall in his training camp. “We all know it’s a metaphor, a figure of speech,” he said. “We’re two proud athletes at the top of our game. There’s no cheap talk from either of us, no slagging each other off.”

WBA #11 heavyweight Denis Bakhtov (33-5, 23 KOs) turned Steffen Kretschmann’s payback time into a nightmare (of sorts), ultimately stopping him for the second time in the ninth round. Several other prospects, including Beijing gold medalist Felix Diaz (5-0, 3 KOs), continued their rises to glory as well, notching important victories during the past three months.
