Andre Dirrell Update

By Mariano A. Agmi

Promoter Gary Shaw has provided an update on the condition of Andre Dirrell after the blow he suffered when Abraham landed a huge right hand to his head while he was down. “Andre suffered a concussion. One doctor thought he suffered a seizure. His thoughts were very scrambled. He went from yelling to everyone over at Showtime, ‘who called me a coward’ to yelling ‘they knocked me out’ to ‘where’s the fight? I want to fight,’” stated Shaw. Shaw explained that the Michigan State Athletic Commission should have taken additional precautions when a disheveled Dirrell seemed disoriented and confused following the incident. “I think the fact that Michigan has not done a lot of big fights created some problems within the ring,” explained the promoter. “[Andre] should have been taken from the ring in a stretcher and transported immediately to the hospital. Instead he walked to the dressing room and while there was absolutely scrambled”. (more…)

‘KenFlo’ submits Gomi

Results by Brady Crytzer

Kenny “KenFlo” Florian gave former PrideFC champion Takanori Gomi an unkind welcome to the UFC by submitting him in the third round with a tight rear naked choke. Florian controlled the stand up portion of the fight with tight, accurate punches and a particularly effective jab. Gomi had no answer for the boxing of Florian and could only throw wild punches. In the third round, Gomi scored with a left hook prompting Florian to slam him to the mat. Florian quickly sunk in the fight ending rear naked choke at 2:52 of the third round.

The Ultimate Fighter 10 winner Roy “Big Country” Nelson made quick work of Stefan “Skyscraper” Struve in just :39 seconds with a crushing overhand right. (more…)

Holyfield-Botha announce team

Hall of Fame boxing announcer Al Bernstein will serve as ringside analyst on the April 10 pay per view telecast of the Evander Holyfield-Frans Botha match, live from the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. Joining Al on the telecast will be play by play announcer Tripp Mitchell. Al said he is looking forward to this event for two reasons: “First, Holyfield and Botha are matched well, and this will be an interesting and competitive fight. Evander showed in his last fight with Valuev that minus the shoulder issues he had for a number of years—he can still be effective. He should have won a decision in that fight. Botha will be in front of him, which stylistically should make for a fun fight. Secondly, I have seen many Crown boxing cards and I know Crown’s matchmaker Frank Luca is one of the best matchmakers in boxing. He has created an exciting overall card for April 10 that will be entertaining to the fans in the arena and those who watch on pay per view. And I love that he’s done it while keeping the PPV and live ticket prices very reasonable, for fans to see a boxing legend for one of the last times.”

Quezada to face Gavern

Goossen Tutor will present the first of its four scheduled 2010 shows at the Tachi Palace Hotel & Casino in Lemoore, California on April 8 with a card headlined by WBC #8 heavyweight Manny “El Toro” Quezada (29-4, 18 KOs) who faces veteran Jason Gavern (18-7-3, 8 KOs). It’s promoter Dan Goossen’s plan to continue Quezada’s development at Tachi and get him a world heavyweight title shot – possibly there – later this year. Also featured are undefeated junior welterweight Michael “Silent Assassin” Dallas, Jr. (12-0-1, 3 KOs) and the pro debut of Fresno super bantamweight Michael Ruiz. A fourth locally raised product – Hanford’s Shawn Estrada – was scheduled to be featured on the show but unfortunately, the snake-bitten 2008 U.S. Olympian reinjured his hand preparing for his bout and was forced to withdraw but promised to be ringside to watch his stablemates. Tickets are $225, $60, $40, $35 and $20. Call 800-277-2255.

Haye vows destruction of Ruiz

While John Ruiz has taken a low key approach to Saturday’s world title fight against WBA champion David Haye, Haye has quite vocally promised to destroy Ruiz. “I wouldn’t bring my family either, if I knew I was going to get decapitated!” Haye told Sky Sports News. “He’s gonna get knocked out and maybe subconsciously he knows that. That’s why he told his family to stay at home…I’m bred to do this, I’m a fighter through and through. I know what it’s like to be in hard fights, I know what it’s like to dig dip and I’m expecting to have to dig deep. I’m mentally prepared for a tough, gruelling fight – but a fight he will end up unconscious in.”

Kameda scandal explodes

Thangarajah: It's a serious slander to the WBC

By Joe Koizumi

The aftermath of the WBC flyweight title bout of Pongsaklek Wonjongkam defeating Koki Kameda last Saturday has become more and more scandalous day after day here in Japan. Kameda’s father Shiro, under the JBC’s indefinite suspension, shouted at the WBC supervisor Edward Thangarajah, a highly respected executive member of the Council, accusing him of his supervision on the said title bout. Tokyo Sports front-paged this scandal that happened in the dressing room after Kameda’s well-received and obvious loss admitted by the whole crowd. Edward was quoted as saying, “I have never received such a disgusted humiliation by any boxing person in my forty-five-year boxing life of covering more than one thousand bouts. His barbarous behavior was a serious slander to the WBC. He disgracefully shouted and almost punched the JBC representative. He must understand that boxing is a sport of gentlemen. I’ll report all what really occurred that night in detail to our president Dr. Jose Sulaiman.” (more…)
