Arreola-Adamek postfight presser

By Francisco Salazar

Despite being hit with hard right hands or left hooks by Chris Arreola on Saturday night, Tomasz Adamek feels that he has a heavyweight chin. He also thinks that he can be a major player in the heavyweight division. Adamek won a 12 round majority decision at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, in a bout that thrilled the 6,256 in attendance and those who watched on HBO. Despite being outweighed by over 33 pounds and fighting in Arreola’s backyard, Adamek did enough to win on two judges’ scorecards, while the third judge scored the fight a draw. (more…)

Adamek defeats Arreola

Angulo stops Julio in 11th

Photo: Big Joe Miranda

By Francisco Salazar and Felipe Leon at ringside

In an important clash of heavyweight contenders, Tomasz Adamek (41-1, 27 KOs) showed he belongs in the heavyweight division with a twelve round majority decision over Chris Arreola (28-2, 25 KOs) on Saturday night at the Citizens Business Bank Arena, Ontario, California. Arreola, who outweighed Adamek by 33 pounds, had difficulty connecting on the former light heavyweight and cruiserweight world champion, who was far busier early on. Both fighters landed big shots in the fourth round. Arreola’s size and strength became more of a factor as the fight progressed but Adamek changed his tactics and fought at his pace from rounds seven to nine. Arreola picked up the pressure in the tenth round. Both fighters landed good shots in the eleventh round. Adamek spent the final round pot-shotting a frustrated Arreola from the outside. Scores were 114-114, 115-113, 117-111.

In an intriguing clash of big-punching junior middleweights, WBO interim champion Alfredo Angulo (18-1, 15 KOs) KO’d Joel Julio (35-4, 31 KOs) in the eleventh round. Boxing from the outside, Julio outworked Angulo for the first third of the fight. Angulo’s pressure, however, began to break Julio down and he finished him with a big right hand in the eleventh. Time was 1:39.

Julio – Angulo Weigh-In Drama

By: Ellen Haley

The undercard weigh-in for this Saturday’s “Ring of Fire” boxing show was held at the Hilton Ontario Airport Hotel this afternoon. The Jr. Middleweight co-feature was supposed to be first on scale, however Alfredo Angulo failed to show at the scheduled report time. Rumors quickly began circulating about Angulo being overweight. Members of Angulo’s camp present at the weigh in claimed he was stuck in traffic.

After waiting more than 1 hour the commission allowed the rest of the undercard to weigh in. While waiting, Joel Julio calmly passed the time talking with his camp. Angulo showed up 1-3/4 hours late.

Somber looking, Angulo was first on the scale, coming in at 153.75 lbs. Joel Julio, looking amazingly fit, weighed in at 153.25 lbs. Anthony Hamm, Julio’s trainer, joyously cried out “And that’s without missing one meal!”

The California Boxing Commission fined Angulo $15,000 for being late to the weigh-in. It was agreed by all parties that the fine money would be paid to Joel Julio.

The Julio – Angulo fight is the co-feature fight on HBO’s Boxing After Dark show this Saturday, April 24, 11:15pm ET/PT.
