Mayweather, Mosley face off

Photos by Chris Cozzone

Photo: Floyd “Money” Mayweather, Jr. and “Sugar” Shane Mosley face off at the final presser, held today at the MGM’s Hollywood Theater in Las Vegas. There was very little trash talking at today’s presser, and, both, Mayweather and Mosley showed mutual respect for each other in regard to Saturday’s mega-fight showdown.
. . . . .
Quick quotes by Andreas Hale

Mayweather: “Getting ready for a fight of this magnitude, you must be ready mentally and physically. I know what it takes. It takes hard work, dedication, prayers and belief in a good team. . . . May 1st I’m going to be Floyd Mayweather and do what I do best. That is be smart, be sharp and fight hard.”
. . . .
Floyd Mayweather Sr.: “My son is quicker, more clever and (Shane) doesn’t have any defense. Bad news!”
. . . .
Roger Mayweather: “I think my nephew is the greatest thing in life just like Jack Mosley thinks is son is the greatest thing in life. On May 1st, we’re going to have to put that opinion to rest. When that time comes and all is said and done, no matter what happens, (to Jack Mosley) you still can invite me over to the house so I can have dinner with you.”
. . . .
Shane Mosley: “I’m just happy to be able to show my talents and skills. I’m going to put everything on the line . . . . This will have to be one of the greatest fights of this decade and maybe even history.
. . . .
Naazim Richardson: “You have good fighters, you have champions, you have elite fighters and then you have guys who are special. In this fight you get the rare occasion where two special fighters will face each other.”

Q&A: Byron Mitchell

Ed Mulholand

Former two-time super middleweight champion Byron “Gator” Mitchell (28-5-1, 21 KOs) says he’s feeling “super” in final preparations for his showdown with Otis “Triple OG” Griffin. Mitchell and Griffin will square off in the main event of X-Cel Worldwide in association with Bang Productions’ “Hassle at the Castle” boxing benefit gala at Oheka Castle in Huntington, New York on May 7.
Coming off a TKO2 over former champion David Telesco last October, the hard-punching Mitchell is hoping a victory over Griffin will bring him closer to his dream of another world title fight. The 36-year-old Alabama native has won three of four since coming out of semi-retirement and signing a promotional deal with promoter Nick Garone’s X-Cel Worldwide in late 2008. Mitchell’s only loss was a short-notice stoppage to current WBA light heavyweight champion Beibut Shumenov. (more…)

Bute seeking challenger

Stieglitz says no to unification

By Dave Spencer / Fightnews Canada

The search continues for a dance partner for IBF super-middleweight champion Lucian Bute and his return to his native Romania on July 24th. According to Interbox officials, WBO champion Robert Stieglitz has turned down a potential chance at unification. “It is the biggest and most significant offer we’ve ever given to an opponent of Lucian Bute. We got the answer today and unfortunately the answer was no.” With a six pack of contenders being occupied by the current Showtime televised tournament, the pickings for potential opponents are slim within the 168 division. Off the fourteen listed IBF contenders, a full seven are boxers either involved in current tournament or people Bute has already beaten. The Montreal boxer awaits the winner of the #2 and #4 contenders Jesse Brinkley and Sakio Bika in a fight set for May, but there wouldn’t be enough turn around time for that fight to happen in July.

Wise men say only misunderstanding of the opponent’s real power may produce a superfight between superstars, but we cannot help thinking there might be an exception of each respecting and evaluating the rival’s credentials. WBC bantam champ Hozumi Hasegawa (28-2, 12 KOs), Japan, having scored ten defenses straight with latest five within a short distance, will put his belt on the line against WBO ruler Fernando Montiel (40-2-2, 30 KOs), Mexico, three-class champ of the fly, super-fly and bantam categories, on Friday in Tokyo, Japan. Akihiko “Only in Japan” Honda of Teiken Promotions has materialized this dream fight. Minto, Huck Presser

Captain Huck: “I will wear Minto down“

Photo: Team Sauerland

WBO Cruiserweight Champion Marco “Captain” Huck (28-1, 21 KOs) and American challenger Brian “The Beast” Minto (34-3, 21 KOs) came face-to-face today for the first time ahead of Saturday´s world title clash in Oldenburg, Germany. Just like yesterday at the press training, Minto was again wearing dark sunglasses – but only until Huck took them off him during the stare-down. “I wanted to see his eyes,” the champion said. “And he should get a good look at me so that he has an idea of what will be waiting for him on Saturday. I never underestimate any opponent, but Minto will not be leaving with my title, you can be sure of that.”

Huck has predicted to personally make Minto pay for retiring German legend Axel Schulz back in 2006. “I cannot understand why he wants to do that,” Minto said. “This is a completely different fight and has nothing to do with Schulz. I am in great shape and I am here to win the title.” Yet Huck feels he owes one to Schulz. “I was a big fan of him and I really wanted to see him fight again, but Minto spoiled his comeback. Now I will make him pay big time.”

Meanwhile, Pat Nelson, Minto´s manager, expects an exciting battle. “Huck and Brian have very similar styles so it will be an
action-packed contest. Brian has not come all the way to Germany to lose – he is here to win the title.” Said Ulli Wegner: “Minto is a strong opponent, but Marco has continued his impressive development. He has matured as a fighter, inside and outside the ring. He certainly got what it takes to beat Minto, but he needs to stick to the game plan.”

On the undercard, WBO Intercontinental Light Heavyweight Champion Karo Murat (21-0, 13 KOs) defends his title against Tommy Karpency (19-1,12 KOs), while up-and-coming middleweight Dominik Britsch (18-0, 7KOs) takes on Alessio Furlan (24-15, 9 KOs).

Oosthuizen stops Roman in 8

By Ron Jackson

South Africa’s Thomas Oosthuizen (13-0, 10 KOs) was most impressive in scoring an eighth round knockout over the rugged Saul Roman (34-7, 13 KOs) from Mexico at the Emperors Palace Casino in Kempton Park on Tuesday night. The southpaw Oosthuizen (76kg) dominated the fight from the first bell as he jolted Roman’s head back with stiff right and left combinations through the first four rounds. Despite absorbing some tremendous punishment Roman (76.20kg) never looked in trouble and even came back to possibly shade the fifth round when he stopped the South African in his tracks with a big overhand right. However, Oosthuizen once again took control in the sixth and seventh rounds before landing a big shot to the side of the head that sent the Mexican flat on his back where he was counted out by referee Thabo Spampool at 35 seconds into round eight. The judges were Alfred Buqwana, Neville Hotz and Tony Nyangiwe. (more…)
