Oleg Maskaev Update

Courtesy Jim Jenkins, Sacramento Bee

Former WBC heavyweight champion Oleg Maskaev is based in West Sacramento, Calif., and will be fighting virtually in his backyard on Dec. 11, but chose Reno, Nev., and its 4,400-foot altitude, 130 miles away, as the site of his training camp. “It’s something I like to do for added conditioning,” explained Maskaev. A onetime New Yorker after relocating from the former Soviet Union, he was accustomed to training for fights in higher elevations on the East Coast as well.

Maskaev (36-6, 27 KOs) is 40 and will be taking on a 25-year-old foe in Nagy Aguilera (14-2, 9 KOs) of New York in their scheduled 10-rounder next month at downtown Sacramento’s historic Memorial Auditorium. But, according to Maskaev’s promoter, Dennis Rappaport, who left the Big Apple to be encamped with his fighter, the ex-champ is sparring with the zeal of someone much younger in pursuit of regaining the title he lost last year to Samuel Peter. By Robert Coster

The next big fight in the welterweight division is the WBC-WBA title unification bout between champions Andre Berto and Shane Mosley on January 30th, 2010 — a clash of two generations. The possible outcome of this battle has the fans and pundits divided. Those who favor Mosley, a majority, point out that the future Hall of Famer has the edge in experience, skills, versatility and has fought high caliber opponents. Those who back the undefeated Berto speak of his strength, youth, speed and the possibility that Father Time may very well catch up withthe 38-year-old Shane. This is certainly the opinion of Lou DiBella, Berto’s promoter, who predicts that “on January 30th, the era of Shane Mosley ends and that of Andre Berto starts.” And what does Andre Berto himself think? The personable Andre answers a few pointed questions from Fightnews. (more…)

Griffin Decisions McCreedy

Stepping up the competition. That’s what it’s all about for a young, developing fighter. Learning, improving and fighting better competition as you yourself progress to be prepared for the day when, hopefully, you’ll get a shot at the big time. For “Irish” Joe McCreedy (11-4-1, 6 KOs), a gutsy 24-year old from Lowell, Massachusetts, that step up was this past Friday night at Twin River Events Center in Lincoln, Rhode Island on Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports presented CES Boxing’s “Autumn Classic,” which featured several rising stars on the New England Boxing horizon. Unfortunately for McCreedy, he dropped a unanimous decision victory to “The Next Great Champ” reality show winner Otis Griffin (21-6-2, 8 KOs) in a hard fought battle. 2008 U.S. Olympic Team alternate Danny O’Connor (10-0, 3 KOs) took the fight to a game challenge from his opponent James Hope (4-3, 4 KOs) however in the end it was O’Connor walking away with the shutout six round unanimous decision win.
