A fight for a full version of the WBO cruiserweight title between the newly crowned champion Victor Emilio Ramirez (14-1, 12 KOs) and WBO #12 Azerbaijani veteran Ali Ismailov (15-1-1, 11 KOs) is no go on April 11 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. “Two weeks ago we received documents which confirmed that Ramirez had sustained an injury during his training camp”, explained Alexander Yagupov, Ismailov’s representative and vice-president of Jab Promotions. “We hope to get a new version of the contract in coming days. The new date is still to be defined exactly but the first week of May seems to be the biggest possibility. The fight is signed and the preparation is under way for Ali. Controversial two-time WBA super-middleweight champion Anthony Mundine today told the Brisbane Times that a fight with WBO and WBC middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik is in the works should he win his May 27th fight in Brisbane with current unbeaten IBO champion Daniel Geale. The WBA#1 ranked middleweight stated, “After this fight I want to unify the division with Pavlik, Sturm and [IBF champion] Arthur Abraham, and at this stage it’s looking like there’s a good chance of something happening with Pavlik,” Mundine said. “The best thing is that it’s not Pavlik’s people pushing it – it’s HBO, the television network he’s with. They know who I am, they know that I’m a character, that I’ve got flamboyance and charisma and that I can fight. I just want the opportunity to show them that I’m the No.1 middleweight in the world.” (more…)

WBA heavyweight champion Nikolay Valuev is reluctantly considering a voluntary defense of his title because of his inability to land a dream rematch with his only conqueror, Ruslan Chagaev. The WBA permitted the seven-foot-tall Russian Giant to make an optional defense before facing Chagaev in the fall, but Valuev was so intent on revenge that he requested an immediate purse bid so that Chagaev rematch could be scheduled before German boxing fans go on summer holiday. Surprisingly, the WBA received the request but since then has done nothing to facilitate a second bout between Valuev (50-1, 34 KOs) and Chagaev (25-0-1, 17 KOs), a champion who was moved to WBA champion ‘in recess’ due to his constant injuries. Because Valuev and Chagaev are under contract to rival promoters and television networks, negotiations are highly unlikely to be concluded without the WBA’s assistance. (more…)
Jason Estrada is convinced he can spring a surprise and upset Alexander Povetkin in Dusseldorf on Saturday night. It will be a special fight as the two protagonists share a lot of things in common. Both boast an impressive amateur record, both fought in Olympic tournaments and both have set their sights on a victory on Saturday night. “We have come to Germany to take home the Olympic gold medal Povetkin won in 2004,” Estrada´s promoter Jimmy Burchfield said. “Jason was one of the best amateur fighters in the country and he was one of the favourites to win Olympic gold at Athens.” While Povetkin, who is also a European and World amateur champion, went on to win the Olympic tournament, Estrada did not make it to the final due to an early loss. “It just was not my day,” he said. “I did not perform well. But I feel much more comfortable as a pro. I never really liked the way of fighting and scoring in the amateur system.” (more…)

Of all the ring joints in all the towns in all the world, Librado Andrade walks back into the Bell Centre this Saturday April 4th as the Mexican warrior battles Vitali Tsypko in an IBF super-middleweight title elimination. The fight will serve as the co-feature to the Kendall Holt versus Timothy Bradley unification bout featured on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING live at a special time 10:45 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast). That’s right, the same Bell Centre that saw Andrade running out of time in his quest to become world champion as he managed to catch Lucian Bute in the waning seconds of the final round and put the champion on the floor for the first time in his professional career. The same Bell Centre that made referee Marlon B. Wright a household word as he admonished the fighter back to a neutral corner as Bute teetered on the ropes. The same Bell Centre which weeks later would try its best to move towards MMA rules by introducing the five minute round. Yes, that Bell Centre. (More)
