Viloria’s goals

By Dennis Principe

There are two objectives world light flyweight Brian Viloria aim to chase in his title defense today and one of them is his Mexican foe Jesus Iribe. Interviewed by Fightnews, Viloria believes he will be literally hunting Iribe inside the ring as the Mexican challenger is known for his ring generalship in establishing a fairly impressive record of 15-5-5, with 9 knockouts. “I don’t think he’s gonna stay in there with me and exchange with me in the middle. He’s just going to box his way around and use his reach to keep me at bay“ said Viloria “But I’m ready and come fight night I’ll just go in there and do my thing.” (more…)

‘Nog’ looks to rise again

UFC 102 LIVE on PPV TONIGHT at 10PM ET/7PM PT

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira had been here before, so many times that it’s hard to pick just one favorite comeback. Was it the time that he rebounded from being driven head first into the canvas by Bob Sapp to submit the 6 foot 5, 350 pounder? How about the one when he absorbed a series of flush head kicks from Mirko Cro Cop only to take his foe down and force him to tap out? Or maybe it was losing the first two rounds to Tim Sylvia before submitting him in round three? . . . Click more by Thomas Gerbasi, UFC

UFC 102 LIVE on PPV Saturday, Sept. 29 at 7 PM PT/10 PM ET: When the history of mixed martial arts is written, two names will stand at the top of the heavyweight division – Randy “The Natural” Couture and Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira. Holm outclasses Blair

Tonight at the Highlands University in Las Vegas, N.M.: Defending her WIBA welterweight title, Holly Holm (25-1-3, 7 KOs) pitched a near-shutout decision over outclassed Terri Blair (11-14-2, 6 KOs). Following Holm around the ring and unable to open up, Blair was on the receiving end of a variety of shots throughout the fight. Scorecards read 100-90 twice, and 99-91. In the co-main, former Las Vegas contender Frankie Archuleta (26-7-1, 14 KOs) had a difficult time winning a unanimous decision over gutsy Las Crucen Lorenzo Estrada (3-15-1, 1 KO). Scores were 77-75 and 78-74 twice. Blown-up lightweight Arturo Crespin (3-1, 1 KO) ran out of gas again, but was able to pull off a decision over jr. middleweight Freddy Cisneros (1-1-1). Scores were 40-36 twice and 39-37. In a sixer at jr. middle, Lucas Galle (6-4) outboxed Jermiah Torres (7-16, 1 KO), with scores of 59-55, 58-56 and, somehow, 56-58. In the opener, Las Vegas’ Amanda Crespin (0-1) lost her pro debut to the more aggressive Nohime Dennison (1-0), who edged her out with scores of 38-38, 40-36 and 39-37. Stay tuned for a full report tomorrow. — Chris Cozzone

Urango stops Bailey in thriller

Cloud dominates Woods for IBF 175 belt

IBF junior welterweight titleholder Juan Urango (22-1-1, 17 KOs) successfully defended his title with an exciting knockdown-filled eleventh round stoppage over former two-time champion Randall Bailey (39-7, 35 KOs) on Friday night at the Seminole Hard Rock Live Arena in Hollywood, Florida. The entire bout was hotly contested between the huge-punching Bailey and the relentless Urango. Bailey dropped Urango hard with a huge right hand in round six and the clearly hurt “Iron Twin” barely beat the count. The iron-willed Urango, however, came back with a strong body attack and brutally floored Bailey twice in round nine. Bailey managed to get out of the round, but Urango floored him again in the tenth. Bailey’s corner finally stopped the fight in the eleventh. Time was 1:51.

In a clash for the vacant IBF light heavyweight title, unbeaten #1 rated Tavoris Cloud (20-0, 18 KOs) punished #2 rated former champ Clinton Woods (42-5-1, 24 KOs) for twelve rounds to claim the belt. The 27-year-old Cloud simply had too much power and too much energy for the more experienced 37-year-old Woods. Cloud rocked Woods in rounds eight and ten, dominating down the stretch. Scores were 116-112 on all cards. (more…)

Alcine victorious in return

By Dave Baggs / Fightnews Canada

Former WBA light middleweight champion Joachim Alcine, making his first ring appearance in a little over a year, pounded out an uninspiring 10 round unanimous decision over Eric Mitchel moments ago at the Casino de Montreal, in Montreal, Quebec. Scores of the bout were 97-93 (twice) and 96-93 in favor of the ex champ from Montreal. Alcine (31-1, 19 KO’s), in his first bout under the watchful eye of new trainer Buddy McGirt, had to deal with both ring rust and an opponent who did nothing but clinch and hold at every opportunity. Unable to create any distance, Alcine was forced to participate in a clinch-filled affair that marred his return and brought boo’s and jeers as early as round 5. With the fight much closer on the scorecard, Mitchell proved in the end to be his own worst enemy with multiple warning and finally a point deductions in round 9 for excesive holding. Round 10 brought cheers from the crowd as they knew the bout was almost over. Alcine, 11 months removed from his last fight, was obviously disappointed with the lack of effort by his opponent but was all smiles when his name was announced as the victor. Mitchell, for his efforts, slips to 22-6-1. (more…)

Hanks defeats Jordan!

Photo: Rocco Morales

Photo: Rocco Morales

By Rocco Morales

Thursday night, a sellout crowd of 1,412 fight fans came out to the Irvine Marriott for the ever popular Battle In The Ballroom put on by Roy Englebrecht Promotions. In main event action, somebody’s “0″ had to go and in this case it was going to be one of two undefeated heavyweights, as Ashanti Jordan risked his perfect (10-0, 7 KOs) record against the very tough Joe Hanks (8-0, 6 KOs). Although Hanks had a noticeable size advantage, and having fought before in the Battle Of The Ballroom series, enjoyed the hometown support, it was Ashanti who seemed to have more experience, if not the better skills. However, it was Hanks who was able to let his fists fly and who racked up the points on the judges scorecards, while Jordan mostly countered Hanks. For more details and photos click here…
