Rodriguez, Hlatshwayo vow victory!

Welterweight contenders Delvin Rodriguez (24-2-2, 14KO) and Isaac Hlatshwayo (28-1-1, 10KO) spoke to reporters today in advance of Saturday’s clash for the vacant IBF welterweight championship at the Mohegan Sun Resort and Casino in Uncasville, CT. The bout between Rodriguez (IBF #2) and Hlatswhayo (IBF #3) will be a rematch of their highly entertaining draw that took place back in November of 2008.
Delvin Rodriguez: I can not wait to get into the ring come August 1st. We have been training hard for this for the past eight weeks. This is an absolute dream come true to me, to not only be fighting for the championship of the world, but to do it in front of my hometown fans. I am not going to leave any doubt this time who is the winner. I will be walking out of the ring August 1st as the new IBF welterweight champion of the world, I promise you.
Isaac Hlatshwayo: I am physically and mentally 100 percent ready to go. Come August 1st I am prepared to do what I do best, and that is to fight and to win. Team Titov signs Felix Diaz!

By Alexey Sukachev

German Titov, 2007/2008 Russian promoter of the year, has reached a promotional deal with 2008 Beijing light welterweight gold medalist Felix Diaz, 25, of the Dominican Republic. The recent pro debutant, who quickly stopped Mexican Hugo Pacheco (3-7, 3 KOs) in his first and only fight in the paid ranks this June, scored a highly controversial decision over Frenchman Alexis Vastine in semifinals of the last Olympics, but sensationally upset the odds by schooling famed Thai Manus Boonjumnong in the final. “Yes, I can confirm that we signed an agreement with Felix Diaz,” commented Titov to this reporter. “Felix will be a marvelous addition to our team and we hope to see him making a huge and long-lasting impact on the international fight scene in several coming years. Diaz will continue to fight overseas, in America, but I plan to have him fighting in Russia, maybe one-two times a year, as well.” Diaz will be the second Beijing medalist to sign a contract with German Titov and his partners; the first one being Ukrainian super heavyweight Vyacheslav Glazkov, who made his debut about a month ago.

Warren wins libel suit!

Promoter Frank Warren has won £35,000 in libel damages against former WBO heavyweight champion Herbie Hide at London’s High Court. The award follows comments made by Hide on a Setanta Sports broadcast in July last year. Hide alleged that Warren had bribed WBO cruiserweight champion Johnny Nelson to retire and give up his world title so that Enzo Maccarinelli would unjustifiably gain it without having to fight Nelson. Warren obtained a summary judgement against Mr Hide earlier this year, and was today awarded £35,000 in damages by Judge Patrick Moloney QC. Warren was also granted an injunction preventing Hide from repeating the libel. Describing the libel against Warren as “serious”, the judge said that the words spoken had damaged the promoter’s reputation, and he was entitled to be vindicated. “I am pleased with the judgement and hopefully it will put an end to the matter,” said Warren outside court, “and Herbie Hide will see what a stupid fellow he is in making remarks like that.”

Valuev undisputed WBA champ!

The latest WBA Ratings have confirmed Nikolai Valuev as the undisputed WBA Heavyweight Champion. The Russian Giant is listed as the sole heavyweight champion, with Ruslan Chagaev having been moved to the number one spot of the rankings. Furthermore, Chagaev is not considered “champion in recess” any more. “We welcome the WBA´s decision,” said Chris Meyer, General Manager of Team Sauerland. “It confirms what we have been saying for a long time – that Nikolai Valuev is the undisputed WBA Heavyweight Champion.” Chagaev had twice pulled out of fights with Valuev in May and July 2008. The third attempt – a fight in Helsinki – fell through in May 2009 when Chagaev was unable to fulfil the Finnish Boxing Federation´s medical requirements. “Since the new ratings clearly state who the true champion is, we can now submit the applications for official approval of Niko´s next fight – the voluntary defence against David Haye,” Meyer added. Valuev’s clash with Haye is scheduled for November 7.

Vernon Forrest remembered

“I am deeply, deeply saddened by this senseless horrible tragedy and my heart goes out to his mother and family. Vernon was a great fighter but much more importantly, he was a very special person outside the ring. His charitable efforts are all well-known and documented but that was only the tip of the iceberg. Vernon was a genuinely kind-hearted, caring and supremely principled and loyal human being. I came to know him and love him as a great friend far beyond the realm of boxing. He was the first fighter I became involved with as an advisor and he and I had a special bond from the very beginning. Vernon was a great human being and the world was a better place with him in it. I will always treasure the time we spent together and I will always love him and miss him. May God bless and keep him.” Al Haymon, manager

“Everyone at HBO Sports is shocked and saddened at the untimely death of Vernon Forrest. Vernon was a credit to the sport. He was one of the most charitable and gracious champions. He will be missed by the entire HBO family.” Ross Greenburg, President of HBO Sports
—–
I am grief stricken to learn of the tragic death of Vernon Forrest. Not only was he my client, he was my friend. He gave me a wonderful opportunity when he asked me to help him tell his story both in and out of the ring beginning in 2001. The journey was terrific as not only was he a great champion, but he was a caring humanitarian who always stood up for what he believed to be the fairness of life. Most importantly his work outside of the ring, particularly with his established foundation Destiny’s Child, which provided group housing for mentally challenged young adults in the Atlanta area, was the shining light of his life…..the tragedy of his untimely death is extremely hurtful as boxing has lost another great champion and a long-standing member of our sport’s community. I will miss him dearly and he will forever hold a very special place in my heart. With sympathy to his family, friends and the entire boxing community, I pray for comfort for all of us during this terrible time.” Kelly Swanson, publicist

“I was very saddened by the news of Vernon Forrest’s tragic death. I viewed Vernon as a great competitor in the ring and an even greater man outside of the ring. Heavyweight Fres “The Big O” Oquendo (31-5, 19 KOs) impressively picked apart former world champ Bruce “The Atlantic City Express” Seldon (40-8, 36 KOs) Friday night at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago. Oquendo outboxed Seldon throughout and despite coming in seemingly great shape Seldon’s aggression was no match for the slick and very talented Oquendo. Picking his spots and putting good combinations together, Oquendo had Seldon in serious problems in the seventh, but he was saved by the bell. Seldon then took a knee in the eight after absorbing punishment, and again in the ninth when he allowed for Referee Pete Podgorski to reach the count of ten. The time was 2:35.
