Full Report: Lopez-Duran!

By William “Ski” Wilczewski at ringside

The ‘Wizard of Oz’ made an appearance at Tucson, Ariz.’s Desert Diamond Casino yesterday. But the man behind the curtain — Accra, Ghana’s Ossie Duran — couldn’t quite conjure up enough magic to pull off a victory over Nogales, Sonora, Mexico’s David “The Destroyer” Lopez in the headline bout of ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights. In an action-packed 10-round bout, Lopez (38-12, 25 KOs) took a unanimous decision on all three judges’ scorecards (97-93, 96-94, 96-94) to up his current win streak to 14 straight. Duran (23-8-2, 9 KOs) and his corner men, though, took exception to the decision after leaving the ring relatively unmarked, compared to Lopez’s swollen and slightly bloody right eye. (more…)

Wright gets ‘Punished!’

Ringside by Andreas Hale

When two fighters who nobody else wants to encounter step into the ring with each other, the victor’s spoils are bittersweet. If nobody would want to fight him then, imagine what a decisive victory over a similarly labeled fighter would earn the winner now?

Ronald “Winky” Wright is the type of fighter that nobody looks good against – win or lose. When Paul Williams punctured holes in the celebrated Winky defense and looked magnificent en route to a dominant 12 round unanimous decision, there’s only one question that anyone has to ask.

Who really wants to fight Paul Williams now?  Click here for more

Pasley stops Berry in AC!

By Rick Scharmberg at ringside

Kamarah Pasley and Chuck Berry stepped up to create an all-Philadelphia cruiserweight main event after the original main event fell through last night at the Boardwalk Hall’s Adrian Phillips Ballroom last night in Atlantic City, NJ. Pasley rose to the occasion by winning his fourth straight fight, stopping Berry with a vicious left uppercut at 1:38 of the sixth and final round. The seven bout card produced a full night of boxing that featured some crowd-pleasing knockouts, and showcased the talent of two outstanding young Atlantic City prospects. No one complained when promoter Diane Fischer, of Dee Lee Promotions, announced to the crowd that the main event between Derek Ennis and Ishmail Arvin collapsed, after Ennis could not come close to making weight for their scheduled 154-pound USBA junior middleweight title bout. Ioka’s nephew makes pro debut!

By Joe Koizumi

The professional debut of amateur star Kazuto Ioka, formerly two-time world champ Hiroki Ioka’s nephew, drew some 8,000 spectators, more than the previous day’s world title doubleheader, at the same venue (Osaka Pefectural Gymnasium) in Osaka, Japan, on Sunday. Kazuto, 20, had acquired six national high school championships, and campaigned as amateur boxer in Tokyo Agricultural University. But his failure to participate in the Beijing Olympic Games had him decide to turn to the paid ranks. His amateur mark was a remarkable 95-10, 64 stoppages. Kazuto Ioka, a light-fly boy at 107.75, displayed excellent speed, reflexes and power in dispatching Thai top ranked flyweight contender Thongthailek Por Vorasing (10-10, 5 KOs), 108, at 0:26 of the third session in a scheduled six. A “Homecoming, The Return of Jeff Left Hook Lacy,” took place this past Friday night at the USF Sundome Arena in Tampa, Florida as former super middleweight titleholder Jeff Lacy’s (25-2-0, 17 KOs) comeback to the ring was a successful one as he defeated Otis Griffin (19-5-2, 3 KOs) in a close ten round majority decision. Heavyweight prospect Lenroy “TNT” Thomas (12-1-0, 8 KOs) was very impressive in the co-feature of the evening as he fought Wes Taylor (7-13-1, 9 KO) stopping him within two rounds. Q&A: Celestino Caballero!

Photo: Javiel Centeno

Photo: Javiel Centeno

By Robert Coster

When he dominated then-unbeaten IBF Jr Featherweight Champion Steve Molitor last November, WBA Super-Champion Celestino”Pelenchin” Caballero became only the second boxer from Panama -since Roberto Duran- to unify titles. Prior to the Molitor fight, an underdog Celestino had travelled to Thailand to win the WBA crown with an explosive knockout. But the lanky monarch hasn’t let his success go to his head and he is back in the gym training as hard as ever for the first defense of his unified crown against Jeffrey Mathebula of South Africa. Celestino is one champion that knows too well that you just cannot rest upon your laurels and that defeat can be as sudden as victory. As an unbeaten boxer, he suffered a dramatic kayo loss to Jose Rojas of Venezuela in front of his fans. Yet, four months after, “Pelenchin” showed his metal by stepping back into the ring. Caballero was also the victim of a near fatal car accident. Many predicted he would never fight again, not counting on Celestino’s iron will and grit. Taking time off from his training, the always gracious “Pelenchin” answered a few pointed questions by Fightnews. (more…)

By Lee Bates

Its been nearly a month since WBO interim cruiserweight champion Ola Afolabi (14-1-3, 6 KOs) pulled off his huge upset in England against heavily favored local Enzo Maccarinelli by ninth round TKO to win the vacant title. Apparently Afolabi hasn’t even left the country where he won his title. Word also has it due to some issues that have to be attended to regarding his visa, Afolabi is still in England where fortunately he has family he’s staying with until these visa matters are taken care of. A detailed update on Afolabi, his visa situation, and his next fight will be reported soon. Stay tuned.
