By Robert Coster
Photo: Team Fortuna

Javier Fortuna is one of the hottest prospects in the super featherweight division and he impressively confirmed his rising stock last Friday with a nationally televised two round blowout of former IBF champion Cristobal Cruz. The 22-year-old Fortuna (20-0, 15 KOs) levelled the usually sturdy Cruz with an awesome left cross. Discovered three years ago in the Dominican Republic by promoter Sampson Lewkowicz, Javier is today ranked by three world boxing bodies and seems on the threshold of world title contention. Says Lewkowicz about his protege: “Javier has terrific power and he is also a smooth boxer and has great work ethic. He’s just the complete package.” Fightnews caught up with Fortuna to know more about this young man who seems promised to a bright future. (more…)

Anthony Mundine addresses 9/11 comments

Controversial former WBA world champion is in Las Vegas preparing for his American debut Saturday against Bronco McKart on Pay-Per-View

Photo: Tim Barry

More than a decade after saying Americans brought the 9/11 attacks upon themselves, former WBA super middleweight champion Anthony Mundine (43-4-1, 32 KOs) of Australia is ready to fight for the first time on American soil. Mundine was condemned worldwide and even dropped from the WBC ratings after stating in an interview shortly after the 9/11 attacks, “They call it an act of terrorism, but if you can understand religion, and our way of life, it’s not about terrorism. It’s about fighting for God’s law, and America’s brought it upon themselves.”

Now Mundine claims those words were taken out of context, telling the Sydney Morning Herald, “I have got nothing against any American, I have got nothing against any human being. It breaks my heart that people think I would even have that line of thought about being happy about people dying. That is crap and I want to clarify that because it is wrong.”

Now fighting as a middleweight, Mundine faces 41-year-old Bronco McKart (54-9-1, 32 KOs) in a WealthTV pay-per-view telecast on Saturday at the Palms in Las Vegas — going head-to-head with the HBO telecast of the world championship clash between Amir Khan vs. Danny Garcia which is taking place just blocks away at Mandalay Bay.

Chavez Jr-Martinez Kick-off Presser

By Miguel Maravilla
Photos: Chris Farina/Top Rank

Undefeated WBC middleweight champion and Son of the Legend, Julio César Chávez Jr. (46-0-1, 32 KOS) and two-division world champion Sergio Martinez (49-2-2, 28 KOs), along with their promoters Bob Arum, Fernando Beltran and Lou DiBella, kicked-off a three-city coast-to-coast national media tour in downtown Los Angeles to promote their eagerly-awaited September 15th middleweight championship PPV battle at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.

Sergio Martinez: Julio Cesar Chavez had better take a picture of his son now because after the fight he won’t recognize him. I will really beat him up!

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr: There’s been a lot of lies about what happened with the WBC title. He gave up the title and he’s got a great relationship with the WBC. He’s the one who’s been protected by the WBC. I haven’t been protected by the WBC, I’ve been fighting the best. He wanted to make money. That’s why he’s here…don’t have any doubts that I’m going to be the winner. (more…)
