Today in Mexico City, three-time world champion Jorge “Travieso” Arce and Angky Angkota met for the first time in the final press conference in route to their big championship showdown this Saturday for the WBO super flyweight championship that will be held at the “Plaza de Toros Arroyo” and to be telecast in the United States by Fox Sports Net and Fox Sports en Espanol as part of the new boxing series “Top Rank Live”. Arce (56-6-1, 40 KOs) of Los Mochis, Mexico and Angkota (23-4, 14 KOs) of Indonesia promised a great show in the main event of the big card promoted by Top Rank and Promociones Zanfer. Campillo ready for rematch

Camp replies to claims about first fight

WBA light heavyweight champion Gabriel Campillo cannot wait for the rematch between himself and Beibut Shumenov this Friday January 29th at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. “I am really looking forward to beating him again this Friday. This time I will knock him out and the fans will see a true champion at work,” said Campillo. Since beating Shumenov in the very hostile environment of his own county of Kazakhstan, Campillo has anxiously waited for the rematch he readily agreed to. “I was treated improperly after the first fight, and I jumped at the opportunity to get to beat him again,” said the champion. The main event of this season’s first “Fight Night Club” show features exciting top junior welterweight contender “Vicious” Victor Ortiz’ return to fight in front of his Southern California fans in a ten rounder against Hector Alatorre on February 25 at LA LIVE’s Club Nokia. In the co-featured bout, rising star Luis Ramos Jr. will see action against an opponent to be announced in a six round lightweight contest. Riddick Bowe Update

Riddick Bowe, the 42-year-old former two-time world heavyweight champion, wants to return to action as quickly as possible and has Juan Carlos Gomez, who is expected to fight in Hamburg in March, in his sights. “I want to get back in the ring as soon as I can and Gomez would be a good fight for me,” says Bowe from his Maryland home. “He already fought Vitali Klitschko and now it’s his last chance to prove he belongs with real world class. I’m even ready to come to Germany for him if that’s what he wants. My legal advisor in Germany, Roman Kolaczek, is ready to set it up for me.” Gomez is under contract with Arena Box-Promotion who recently agreed a contract with the German broadcaster Sat1.

Ponce de Leon returns

Former junior featherweight world champion and current featherweight contender Daniel Ponce De Leon (37-2, 31 KOs) battles Puerto Rican standout Orlando Cruz (16-1-1, 7 KOs) in a 12 round WBC Latino featherweight title bout on February 20 at the Foro Scotiabank in Mexico City. The co-featured bout will feature two of the junior welterweight division’s most devastating punchers – undefeated Lucas Matthysse (25-0, 23 KOs) and former World Champion Vivian Harris (29-3-1, 19 KOs) – as they collide in a bout not likely to last the scheduled 10 rounds. Undefeated Mexico City natives junior welterweight Pablo Cesar Cano and super middleweight Marco Antonio Periban will put their unbeaten records on the line against opponents to be announced in separate bouts. The card will air in Latin America on the HBO Plus service.

Hasegawa honored in Japan

More than two hundred boxing and media people attended an annual award-giving ceremony to celebrate our outstanding boxers who showed remarkable achievements in the previous year in Tokyo, Japan, on Wednesday. WBC bantam champ Hozumi Hasegawa, who registered three more defenses all by fine and fast stoppages en route to his creditable ten defenses, received the Boxer of the Year award for the fourth time. The champ said, “It is not certain yet whether I’ll stay in the bantam division or move up to the feather class, but would like to continue my winning way, hopefully by a knockout victory.” (more…)

IBF Middleweight Champion Sebastian Sylvester will be counting on the ferocious support of his home fans in Neubrandenburg when he takes on Billy Lyell in his first title defence on Saturday night. The American is a late replacement for Pablo Navascues, who failed a random training drug test. “Preparing for a new opponent on short notice is no problem for Sebastian,” said coach Karsten Rower. “We have watched tapes of Lyell. Yusaf Mack vs Glen Johnson has finally been confirmed as the main event on ESPN on the 5th of February in Glen Johnson’s hometown at the NSU Center Arena in Miami, Florida. The Super Bowl weekend fight is almost guaranteed to be a cracker, both fighters know this is there big chance to get back on top with the winner becoming the mandatory challenger to IBF champion Tavoris Cloud, a fight likely to happen in May. The card had numerous notable fights highlighted by heavyweight Ondrej Pala (25-2, 18 KOs) who outpointed veteran Robert Hawkins (23-13, 7 KOs) over over eight, heavyweight Konstantin Airich (12-2-2, 10 KOs) who fought to a second draw with Alex Mazikin (13-4-2, 3 KOs), unbeaten heavyweight Yakup Saglam (24-0, 21 KOs) who annihilated Yuri Lunev (5-12, 2 KOs) in two, middleweight contender Mahir Oral (27-2-2, 10 KOs), who barely got by Fabio Liggieri (10-5-4, 2 KOs), and the Germany debut of 2008 Olympic gold medalist Felix Diaz (4-0, 3 KOs). A purse bid was held in the IBF office today for the vacant IBF lightweight title between Ali Funeka vs. Rolando Reyes. Branco Sports Production was the winning bidder with a bid of $140,000. Gotham Boxing, Inc. bid $76,000. The fight must take place within 90 days.
