Klitschko, Sosnowski comments

It’s official. WBC world heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko defends his title against European Champion Albert Sosnowski from Poland at Veltins-Arena Gelsenkirchen, Germany, on May 29. The arena is the home field of the famous soccer club Schalke 04.

Vitali Klitschko: “I am very happy to have my next fight in Germany again. The arena in Gelsenkirchen and the fans there are very special. I experienced that last year when my brother Wladimir had his fight there in front of 61,000 spectators. The atmosphere was simply electrifying. I saw Sosnowski’s fights on DVD and must admit that he is a very experienced, quick and tough opponent. He will do anything to get my belt but I promise that this is not going to happen.” (more…)

Eastern Europe Update

By Alexey Sukachev

Fast-rising cruiserweight prospect Mateusz Masternak (18-0, 13 KOs) notched another impressive victory this Saturday night to retain his WBC interim Youth title for the second time at Spodek, Katowice, Poland, headlining a major event, arranged there by promoter Jakub Andreas Grajewski. WBC #17 Masternak showed an excellent poise and delivered every punch in the book to continuously hurt and overwhelm durable WBC #36 Frenchman Faisal Ibnel Arrami (11-2, 8 KOs) until getting a well-deserved stoppage at 1:46 of the eighth round. Masternak wobbled Arrami with a picture-perfect right cross followed by a left uppercut and unleashed a barrage of punches prompting referee to step in saving shaken Frenchman from further punishment. Wroclaw native Masternak, 22, opened some eyes the last year, stopping fellow undefeated Lukasz Janik in a dominating fashion. Report: Alexander vs. Urango

Ringside Report by Scott Ploof
Photography by Emily Harney

It took only two vicious uppercuts midway through the eighth round for 23 year old Devon Alexander (20-0, 13 KOs) to defeat Juan Urango (22-3-1, 17 KOs) and unify the WBC and IBF 140 pound titles on Saturday night at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT. Time of the stoppage by referee Benji Estedes was at 1:12 of round eight. Alexander was quicker to the punch throughout as Urango did his best to try and combat the speed of his opponent. Urango did his best to brawl when given the opportunity however Alexander used his footwork to get away from these exchanges as he out-boxed the brawler. The fight card was promoted by Don King Promotions and was televised live on HBO’s Boxing After Dark. In the co-feature attraction of the evening, New York prospect and current WBC USNBC heavyweight titlist, Derric Rossy scored a convincing unanimous decision victory over veteran Zack Page by scores of 117-110, 120-107, and 118-109. Rossy used a little bit of everything in this fight as he had a height and reach advantage over Page. Rossy went on to out-land and frustrate Page throughout the contest en route to the twelve round decision. Click here for the ringside report and action packed photogallery.
