Rafael Ramos will be the referee of the WBO welterweight title fight between Manny Pacquiao and Joshua Clottey on Saturday at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The 53-year-old Texan, originally from Puerto Rico, has been a referee since 1987 and has worked 64 world title fights. “I thank God for this opportunity to be in the fight of Pacquiao, the #1 in the world. For me, for my family and for Puerto Rico it’s a great honor,” said Ramos who previously refereed Juan Manuel Marquez against Juan Diaz. He is a member of both the WBA and IBF. Judges are Nelson Vázquez (PR), Duane Ford (USA) and Levy Martínez (USA).
WBA Super Lightweight World Champion Amir Khan and former Super Lightweight World Champion Paulie Malignaggi will hold a press conference in London on Friday to announce their world title bout set for May 15 at The Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York which will be televised live on HBO in the United States. The fight marks Khan’s United States debut which will take place in the backyard of New York’s Malignaggi.
It’s official. WBC world heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko defends his title against European Champion Albert Sosnowski from Poland at Veltins-Arena Gelsenkirchen, Germany, on May 29. The arena is the home field of the famous soccer club Schalke 04.
Vitali Klitschko: “I am very happy to have my next fight in Germany again. The arena in Gelsenkirchen and the fans there are very special. I experienced that last year when my brother Wladimir had his fight there in front of 61,000 spectators. The atmosphere was simply electrifying. I saw Sosnowski’s fights on DVD and must admit that he is a very experienced, quick and tough opponent. He will do anything to get my belt but I promise that this is not going to happen.” (more…)
With the proposed fight against former WBA heavyweight champion Nikolai Valuev falling through, WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko will now face European champion Albert Sosnowski (45-2-1, 27 KOs), probably on May 29 at the Schalke Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. Klitschko’s manager Bernd Bönte told BILD that Valuev co-promoter Don King rejected a $2.5 million offer. Sosnowski agreed to a $1 million purse and cancelled his fight with Audley Harrison, which was scheduled for April 9.
WBA #8/IBF #11 welterweight Mike Jones (20-0, 16 K0s), of Philadelphia, PA, takes on Hector “The Hurricane” Munoz in the fifth defense of his NABA title in a scheduled 10-round contest on April 17 at in the 10,000-seat Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. Munoz, 31, has a record of 18-2-1, 11 K0s. In his last fight, Munoz was stopped in the 12th round by undefeated top contender (WBA #3, WBO #2) Antonin DeCarie. In the scheduled 12-round main event, Kelly Pavlik defends his WBC/WBO middleweight titles against Sergio Martinez.

Fast-rising cruiserweight prospect Mateusz Masternak (18-0, 13 KOs) notched another impressive victory this Saturday night to retain his WBC interim Youth title for the second time at Spodek, Katowice, Poland, headlining a major event, arranged there by promoter Jakub Andreas Grajewski. WBC #17 Masternak showed an excellent poise and delivered every punch in the book to continuously hurt and overwhelm durable WBC #36 Frenchman Faisal Ibnel Arrami (11-2, 8 KOs) until getting a well-deserved stoppage at 1:46 of the eighth round. Masternak wobbled Arrami with a picture-perfect right cross followed by a left uppercut and unleashed a barrage of punches prompting referee to step in saving shaken Frenchman from further punishment. Wroclaw native Masternak, 22, opened some eyes the last year, stopping fellow undefeated Lukasz Janik in a dominating fashion. Joshua Clottey (35-3, 20ko’s) looked like he’s been here before, as he strolled around the ring and posed for the Dallas Fort Worth media today at the Gaylord Texan Hotel in preparation for the biggest fight of his life against 7-time world champion Manny Pacquiao (50-3-2 38ko’s) in The Event this Saturday, March 13th at Cowboys Stadium. Although he has never been on a stage quite this big, he has fought some of the biggest names of the last decade, including Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito. And if today was any indication, he appeared ever so ready to take on his greatest challenge, even catching Cowboy Owner Jerry Jones by surprise as he reached outside the ring to shake his hand. Current WBA bantamweight world champion Anselmo “Chemito” Moreno of Panama has intensified his training at Mexican trainer Ignacio “Nacho” Beristan’s famous La Romanza Gym in Mexico City. Moreno will be unifying the WBA belt with interim champ Nehomar Cermeño on March 27 in La Guaira, Venezuela. “This is a fight of pride, honor and dignity but above all is for my family, my country and those who have helped me in boxing. It has been a lot of sacrifice up to now and I’ll gave my best that night,¨ says Moreno. He is sparring with Mexican prospects Ray Vargas and Eduardo Escobedo among others. Having been in Manchester, England for a little over 10 days now, Joan Guzman and his trainer Lee Beard are going over final preparations for his March 27th rematch against Ali Funeka. Guzman and Beard have been working hard on his tactics for this fight and have added world renowned nutritionist Kerry Kayes to help with his strength, conditioning and diet. Guzman completed 14 rounds of sparring on Friday and on Saturday he visited Leigh amateur boxing club where he met with the young boxers and took them through their paces sparring and covering training drills. It took only two vicious uppercuts midway through the eighth round for 23 year old Devon Alexander (20-0, 13 KOs) to defeat Juan Urango (22-3-1, 17 KOs) and unify the WBC and IBF 140 pound titles on Saturday night at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT. Time of the stoppage by referee Benji Estedes was at 1:12 of round eight. Alexander was quicker to the punch throughout as Urango did his best to try and combat the speed of his opponent. Urango did his best to brawl when given the opportunity however Alexander used his footwork to get away from these exchanges as he out-boxed the brawler. The fight card was promoted by Don King Promotions and was televised live on HBO’s Boxing After Dark. In the co-feature attraction of the evening, New York prospect and current WBC USNBC heavyweight titlist, Derric Rossy scored a convincing unanimous decision victory over veteran Zack Page by scores of 117-110, 120-107, and 118-109. Rossy used a little bit of everything in this fight as he had a height and reach advantage over Page. Montreal fight fans were treated to another outstanding performance from sensational junior lightweight prospect Logan McGuinness as he battled Mexican veteran Pedro Navarrete in an eight round war on Saturday afternoon.
Fighting at the Montreal Casino for the fifth time in his young professional career, the 22 year old McGuinness improved his unbeaten record to 10-0-0 (4 KO’s) as the Orangeville native displayed toughness belying his youth. (more…)
