Sakai edges Minagawa, keeps Japan 147lb belt

Sakai01 1

Having campaigned long in Mexico and returned to his native land three years ago, Shoki Sakai (29-13-3, 15 KOs), 146.5, barely kept his Japanese welterweight belt as he eked out a close but unanimous decision (95-94, 96-93 twice) over fast-moving southpaw Seeser Minagawa (4-2, 1 KO), 146.75, over ten hard-fought rounds on Saturday in Tokyo, Japan. Minagawa, whose university amateur mark was 70-17, revealed his puzzling lefty style, and occasionally confused the still stiff defending champ. Sakai, however, decked him with a solid right in round three, which eventually carried him to a close victory. The fourth saw a bad head collision, which opened wide gashes on both contestants so that it became a bloody affair since then. Seeser utilized southpaw left uppercuts to have the champ lose his equilibrium in rounds seven and eight, but that wasn’t enough to overcome his early deficits on points. WBO super featherweight world champion Emanuel “Vaquero” Navarrete (38-1-1, 31 KOs) has undergone surgery on his left hand. Navarrete, who retained his title two weeks ago with a draw against Robson Conceicao in Las Vegas, announced the surgery on social media.

Hello friends!

I want to share with you that today, Friday, I underwent a small surgery on my left hand, the result of an old injury that worsened in my second-to-last fight and in the last one no longer allowed me to perform at 100 percent. The pain was a lot.

I consulted with my team, and with my doctor, and we made the decision to attend to this immediately. I will keep you informed how the recovery is going, but I’m sure that in the first months of 2024 we’ll be ready for the new challenges that arise.

I AM A MEXICAN WARRIOR WHO WILL NEVER WITHDRAW FROM ANY CHALLENGE OR COMMITMENT, BUT OUT OF RESPECT FOR YOU AND MY CAREER I WILL NOT GIVE UP ANY ADVANTAGE AGAIN.

Blessings my people.
The “Vaquero” will return 100 percent.

WBA approves new super cruiser division

The World Boxing Association (WBA) Executive Committee has approved the creation of a new super cruiserweight division in a vote called by the president Gilberto Jesus Mendoza. This new division will be between 200 and 224 pounds, matching the bridgerweight division created by the WBC three years ago.

The WBA made several analyses during recent months before considering the request and in the end it was submitted to a vote, in which it was approved unanimously by the executive committee. The creation of this new division is designed to help fighters considered to be “small heavyweights,” who often give up 25 or more pounds. They will now have the option to move down to super cruiserweight and seek opportunities against more balanced weight opponents.

The WBA ranking committee has already begun working on the creation of the rankings for this weight and the first divisional match-ups will be announced soon.

Super lightweights Ryan Garcia (23-1, 19 KOs) and Oscar “La Migraña” Duarte (26-1-1, 21 KOs) hosted a press conference ahead of their fight that will now be for the WBA Gold title on Saturday night at Toyota Center in Houston, Texas and will be broadcast worldwide on DAZN. Ryan Garcia: “I put everything into this fight. You know, for the first time, I’m extremely committed in a long time. You know 2021 was one of the years that kind of broke me. 2022, you know a big change in me, and 2023 opened my eyes. Oscar Duarte: “I’m very happy, very content, to be here. I’m enjoying every moment. This was a dream and it is now a reality. And this Saturday, you’ll see my best version. I have a great team, and this Saturday, I’ll be winning.”
