Kovalev fails drug test

Former light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev has reportedly tested positive for a banned substance (synthetic testosterone). No announcement from Golden Boy or Main Events yet, but Kovalev’s January 30 fight against Bektemir “Bek Bully” Melikuziev on DAZN is probably off.

Melikuziev tweeted, “I don’t like talking, but I said it last night – it makes no difference to me, just put him in the ring, let us fight regardless.”

January 30 originally had four promising boxing telecasts scheduled.

Artur Beterbiev vs. Adam Deines on ESPN (postponed due to Beterbiev getting COVID-19), David Avanesyan vs. Josh Kelly on DAZN (postponed due to UK lockdown), Sergey Kovalev vs. Bektemir Melikuziev on DAZN (likely canceled due to Kovalev’s failed drug test).

Thus far, the Caleb vs. Caleb showdown (Caleb Plant vs. Caleb Truax) on FOX is still on. Keep your fingers crossed.

Zurdo-Browne ordered for WBC interim LH belt

Undefeated former WBO super middleweight champion Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez (41-0, 27 KOs) is all in for a potential World Boxing Council (WBC) interim light heavyweight title fight against 2012 U.S. Olympian “Sir” Marcus Browne (23-1, 16 KOs).

Zanfer Promotions opens 2021 this weekend with WBO #11 super welterweight Carlos “Chema” Ocampo (28-1, 18 KOs) against Abraham “Pitbull” Juárez (20-6, 8 KOs). Promoter Fernando Beltran says the first four months of the year will be spectacular.

Already in February [Miguel] Berchelt will fight against a great boxer in Óscar Valdez, the fight of ‘Gallo’ Estrada against ‘Chocolatito’ González is coming in a unification, [Luis] Nery could unify with the WBA champion Brandon Figueroa, ‘Vaquero’ Navarrete will make his first defense but it could also be a unification, we’re in negotiations for Jaime Munguía to fight for the middleweight world championship against Gennady Golovkin, most likely Jackie Nava will fight in Argentina, or else we can negotiate a fight against ‘Barbie’ Juárez. All this, of course, without neglecting our young talent, our prospects, who despite these difficult moments with closed-door events and complicated situations, we are giving them activity.”

They’re doing events now at full capacity. The problem there is the quarantine for 14 days and they’ve prohibited foreigners from coming in at all to Australia until further notice.”

A big challenge ahead! First thing is to survive

By Mauricio Sulaimán
Son of Jose Sulaiman – WBC President

The most important challenge for everyone in these difficult times is, without a doubt, survival.

Survival in every possible way. Obviously, maintaining our health and preventing the spread of COVID-19 that has impacted the world since the beginning of last year is paramount.

Also maintaining mental health, which is very important but complicated. It is not an easy task to do when we are filled with news of the seriousness of the situation day after day, hour after hour, when all the chats are flooded with negative and alarming messages and when all the talks revolve around the same thing. Charr questions whether bout will take place

Dk Poster 2WBA heavyweight champion Manuel Charr (31-4, 17 KOs) is scheduled to face WBA interim heavyweight champion Trevor Bryan (20-0, 14 KOs) on January 29 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida.

However, Charr isn’t convinced that the bout will happen, writing on his Facebook page: “Do you think the fight will take place? Or is it a wrong play again from Don King? As I said, I am fully in training and I will be fit for the fight. From the street to the stars!”

There is speculation in the German media that the fight announcement is a ploy to get Charr stripped of the WBA belt, which Charr won in 2017 but has yet to defend. At this point, it’s not even certain that Charr can enter the U.S. due to COVID-19 restrictions.
